Indie Speculative Fiction of the Month for July 2018

Indie Speculative Fiction of the Month

It’s that time of the month again, time for “Indie Speculative Fiction of the Month”.

So what is “Indie Speculative Fiction of the Month”? It’s a round-up of speculative fiction by indie authors newly published this month, though some June books I missed the last time around snuck in as well. The books are arranged in alphabetical order by author. So far, most links only go to Amazon.com, though I may add other retailers for future editions.

Once again, we have new releases covering the whole broad spectrum of speculative fiction. This month, we have epic fantasy, urban fantasy, grimdark fantasy, YA fantasy, paranormal mystery, science fiction mystery, science fiction thriller, space opera, space western, military science fiction, science fantasy, post-apocalyptic fiction, dystopian fiction, horror, Steampunk, Mannerpunk, Cyberpunk, Steampunk romance, LitRPG, zombies, witches, dragons, superheroes, vengeful ghosts, deadly videogames, reincarnation, worldending disasters, alien pets, clockwork dogs, space deputies, renegadesm exiles and much more.

As always, I know the authors at least vaguely, but I haven’t read all of the books, so Caveat emptor.

And now on to the books without further ado:

Pendulum Heroes by James BeamonPendulum Heroes by James Beamon:

Melvin Morrow has become a barbarian warrior maiden. Will he be able to escape this new, dangerous world and the chainmail bikini he foolishly chose as his armor or will he and his friends be stuck living their lives as their game avatars?

Melvin's a teenage boy not used to being ogled or the real world consequences of wearing a steel bikini. But the real world has shifted... him, his friends Jason and Rich, and his big brother Mike are stuck in character, in a place where danger doesn't lurk because it prefers to boldly stride out in the open.

Mages import game players like Melvin via the Rift Pendulum. The reason: the work's suicidal and pendulum heroes are insanely powerful. Usually. Melvin and his friends can be, too, if they're in the right emotional state to trigger into character. Melvin's a one-man, uh, one warrior maiden army when he's angry but anger's hard to find with all that mortal danger striding around everywhere.

The road back home's at the end of a suicidal quest. Melvin better find something to rage about... because being genre-savvy only gets you so far.

Pendulum Heroes, James Beamon's debut novel, is an adrenaline fueled adventure for anyone who's spent a little too much time on the character creation screen instead of playing the game, those of us who have thought just how godmode we'd be with mage power, but mostly it's for all of us who have wondered who the heck installs a portal to another world in a wardrobe. Fans of Ernest Cline and Scott Meyer better be prepared to fall in love with a new series..

What Man Defies by Clara CoulsonWhat Man Defies by Clara Coulson:

“It was all fun and games until a vengeful ghost threw a washing machine at your head.”

Three weeks after his disastrous showdown with Abarta, Vincent Whelan is well on his way to recovering from the fight and putting the whole nightmare behind him. But when a standard stretch recovery job comes to an end with an angry ghost slinging heavy objects, Vince discovers a thread he left hanging has frayed beyond repair.

For almost two months, random people in Kinsale have been mysteriously vanishing. Now their shades, damaged by terrible deaths, have begun to plague the city. Spurred by the growing list of victims, Vince goes on the hunt for the person or creature responsible for the kidnappings. Only to get more than he bargained for when one of his own friends is snatched before his very eyes.

In a race against time, Vince puts together a ragtag team to venture into the Otherworld and rescue the remaining victims before they all succumb to a horrible fate. But the path to victory is fraught with peril, and the mastermind at the end of the road may just be unbeatable.

A vault protecting a powerful relic. Merciless enemies at every turn. And countless lives at risk.

All Vince wanted was a little peace and quiet. Now he’s got the fate of the world resting in his hands.

What Man Defies is the second novel of The Frost Arcana, an action-packed urban fantasy series set in a post-apocalyptic world.

Glitch by Victor DeckardGlitch by Victor Deckard:

Max, a rather plain guy, finds himself inside a post-apocalyptic survival roleplaying videogame. He has no idea how he has ended up in the virtual reality or how to quit it. He has no choice but to play the game.

Shortly afterward, he learns that the game is quite harsh and cruel. Max finds out that in order to survive he has to scavenge, gather various resources, craft warm clothes and armor, upgrade weapons and vehicles, and so on.

Moreover, the entire game world is a full-on PvP zone. So Max has to not only fight brutal mutants but also protect himself against gamers who have teamed up in order to ratchet up their chances of survival as well as against high-leveled players who take great pleasure in murdering newbies.

And all the while Max has been trying to find out what has befallen him, how he has gotten in the videogame, and whether or not there is any chance of exiting the game. Bit by bit he gleans more and more information about the game. He finds out that the game is full of bugs. Later on he also learns that he himself is some kind of a glitch. Unlike all the other players, he feels pain in the game and can interact with some game objects while all the other players cannot…

Release date: July 20, 2018
Subgenre: Mannerpunk, Steampunk

About A Quiet Rebellion: Restitution:

Jonathan burns for revenge after fleeing the city with only a stolen uniform and shoes—and a murder charge hanging over him. Unscrupulous scientist Silvers imprisoned him to experiment on, because Jonathan's cursed with a secret, dangerous power. Jonathan will have to survive, reach Silvers and kill him to prevent him from doing further damage.

Rural herbalist Annetta is mortified after accidentally triggering Jonathan's power the last time he visited her town. Convinced he's a threat, she throws her efforts into developing a remedy to prevent him from killing again.

An escaped murderer is just another headache for Eleanor. It's not easy being queen. She needs to negotiate the moral maze that curses raise and avoid being assassinated like her father.

With such disparate goals, will the right people come out on top?

Excerpt:

Artur rang the bell pull at the servants’ entrance to the palace then squeezed himself into the shadow of the doorway. Although it was unlikely someone would pass by and see him, his presence might raise some eyebrows. Clutched in his sweating hand, his overnight bag weighed him down further every second. In accordance with the other instructions on the queen’s missive, he wore work overalls. In deference to her elevated position, he had donned his newest set.
What was the queen planning? Surely this wasn’t a joke at his expense. She hadn’t struck him as the frivolous type, no matter what the gossips said. Might she have a workshop in addition to her library? Maybe she wanted help with some new techne. His breathing quickened. Maybe she even wanted him to‍—
The door creaked open with a waft of mushroom and garlic smells. A plump woman in the pink uniform of the palace staff looked down her nose at him. “Yes?”
Despite the chill in the early evening air, sweat prickled his back. “I’m Artur. Uh, Blimp Engineer Granville, ma’am. I was requested to report here by Queen Eleanor.” Was that as odd as it sounded?
For a moment she frowned. Was she going to send him away? Maybe the queen had changed her mind, despite her enthusiasm during that first visit. That might be a relief, although a disappointment too.
But no, the woman’s frown transformed into a beam. She stepped back and beckoned him in. “Of course. You’re just not quite what I expected. I’m Martha, the head housekeeper.”
Hunching his shoulders, Artur stepped inside. Maybe he’d misunderstood the message. Should he have hired a formal suit again? Overalls of surplus blimp fabric‍—constructed by his frugal mother‍—might not be suitable attire.
“I thought you’d be more bookish. Like a clerk or librarian.” She looked him up and down. “Not quite so sturdy.”
His face heated.
Martha led him through the kitchen and up four flights of service stairs, their footsteps echoing in tandem. A pair of red-clad royal guards stood at each landing. The older ones scowled at Artur while the younger ones grinned. One even gave him a thumbs-up. Artur winced. Hey, it’s not what it looks like. Though he wasn’t even sure of that. Maybe she wants‍—He yanked his thoughts away.
On the residential floor, he tiptoed down a hallway behind Martha, his heavy work boots creaking. What if he trod grease into the plush carpet?
The housekeeper opened a door. “Go on in, lad. This is your room while you’re here. Someone will collect you shortly.”
When he paused in the doorway and blinked, she pushed him inside and shut the door behind him. Her footsteps scuffed softly as she moved off.
He dropped his bag in the middle of the room, which was lit by free-standing oil lamps. So, they’d only installed electrical lighting downstairs. A padded couch with silk cushions stood against the wall, underneath a portrait of King Frederick. He gave the king a cautious nod. A carved oak writing desk and chair occupied one corner. Through an open door he could spy the edge of a bed with an embroidered coverlet. Craning his neck, he took a step towards the doorway‍—

Excerpt:

Something tickled inside Jonathan’s head, a tiny suggestion he was no longer alone with his thoughts. He’d only noticed the sensation on his last few interviews. It made him want to scratch his brain, or maybe pull it out and scrub it with harsh soap and a coarse brush.
“Captain Shelley, are you aware of the penalties for inappropriately divulging classified information?”
This question would lead into the real interview. If he answered in the negative, the voice would remind him that the holes in these walls could conduct a selection of gases into the room. One detailed description of the effects had given him nightmares, and he had no desire to revisit the information.
“Yes, I am aware.”
“Are you aware that we can ascertain whether you are lying?”
“Yes, I am aware.”
“Have you any infractions which you wish to disclose in advance, of your own free will? Volunteering information may allow you some leniency.”
Jonathan paused. Although confident he had not said anything inappropriate—keeping secrets was a necessary survival characteristic—there was always a niggle that something unintentional might have slipped by. “No, I have not.”
“Have you, at any point on your tour of duty, intimated, suggested or implied to individuals without the appropriate clearance level, verbally, by gestures or in writing, any of the information that follows...
“Firstly, any internal deliberations of the Council.”
“No, I have not.”
“Secondly, unpublished information from the scientists or historians.”
“No, I have not.”
“Thirdly, classified information pertaining to the existence of any individuals with cursed powers, either confined within the Keep, or unconfined.”
“No, I have not.”
“Fourthly and finally, that you are an unconfined recipient and practitioner of a cursed power.”
“No, I have not.”
“State the nature of your cursed power.”
“I am able to move small items without physically touching them.”
“Did you, at any point on your journey, make use of your cursed power?”
“Yes, I did. Once.” Jonathan’s voice was husky.
“While exercising your cursed power, did you take precautions to ensure that you were unobserved?”
Sweat dripped into his eyes. “Yes, I did.”
“What was the outcome of that use of your cursed power?”
Jonathan could not answer. His vision blurred, the holes in the wall expanding to float in mid air.
“Captain Shelley, I repeat. What was the outcome of that use of your cursed power? You have ten seconds to provide an answer.”
He forced out a whisper. “I killed a man.” It didn’t seem enough. “He was under my care.” And I murdered him.
Unmoved, the voice continued. “Were there any witnesses to the aforementioned use of your cursed power?”
“No, there were not,” he croaked.
In the silence that followed, the damaged muscle in Jonathan’s thigh began to tremble. His arm ached, and he blinked rapidly.
The column clicked.
“You may leave.”
Once back in the corridor, he lifted a shaking hand to his face and wiped his eyes. The guard, whistling tunelessly, reached back to pull a lever and waved Jonathan towards the turnstile that led into the Royal Compound.

Subgenre: Steampunk romance

About Vesta's Clockwork Companions

When Vesta Bartlett, a wealthy alchemist and inventor, arrives in England to finalize an arranged marriage and help overhaul a family friend's outdated ironworks, she never expects to find the family so secretive, nor to develop feelings for her fiancé’s younger brother, Henry.

But the growing attraction between Vesta and Henry is just the beginning of their troubles. Things really heat up when they're drawn into a secret project for Queen Victoria's military, one that requires Vesta's knowledge of clockwork and Henry’s iron.

An epidemic has wiped out all the dogs in Britain, and beyond. If the military fail in their effort to restore the species, a clockwork creation may be all that stands in the way of a world without canine companionship.

Are Vesta and Henry up to the challenge?

Excerpt:

Ahead, Acton led him up a staircase that wound around the premises. They ended by traversing a hall. At the terminus of the hall, Henry found another door, unassuming, like any in his home. Except another set of armed guards again barred their way.

Acton reached into his coat as he approached and produced a circular device. A small button on its face caused it to glow with a faint yellowish light. He presented this device to the guards. “We’re here on the major general’s orders.”

The guard turned his attention from the device to stare at Henry. “And him?”

Acton laid a hand to his arm. “He’s a new recruit.”

The guard on the left—a tall man with cropped blond hair—nodded and pulled the door open. “Five minutes.”

“I’m what now?” Henry asked as Acton escorted him inside.

“Don’t worry about it. You’ll be all right.”

“How so? It sounds to me like you’re trying to induct me into the corps.” He frowned and turned back to the doors. “Forget it. I have no military ambitions.”

“You have no ambitions I’m aware of. Except, maybe, to help your family.”

The new voice drew his attention. Deep, yet there was an odd tone about it, enough to stop Henry and intrigue him. His first glimpse of the speaker satisfied the curiosity even as it raised new questions.

Major General Charles Gordon rolled up to a desk in an old-fashioned wheelchair. His eyes, his air, all the same as portraits he’d seen of the man in the newspapers. And yet, he was different from the other men around him, even aside from the fact that he was rumored dead.

The gold emblems of rank dotting his coat, the epaulets, these alone would tell anyone the major general’s identity. None of these held as much interest for Henry as the man’s face.

Or lack thereof. His head, from the outline of a hairline, to his lips and chin, all these, some clever surgeon had replicated in brass. The brass continued down the man’s neck, to meet up under the dark jacket. The hands settled on the desk and folded together, likewise, all brass.

Henry met the major general’s gaze. “By the gods!”

“You might sssssay that.”

The voice issuing from the lips and slurring all his s’s made him sound like a lethargic teapot. Henry didn’t know how else to describe it. All other explanation sounded childish even as he thought about it. Wondering what caused the difference, Henry found himself trying to investigate the speaker further. “Sir, I mean … forgive me, I didn’t mean to stare.”

“You wished to see us, Major General,” Acton said, breaking into Henry’s verbal astonishment. “Here we are.”

“Yes, Mr. Wren, I’m pleassssed with what I’m hearing of your work with our men.”

Henry saw no visible reason for why the major general dragged out his “s” that way. He’d never heard of the man having a lisp. Metal tubes and thin wires ran down his cheeks and neck to disappear into the chair behind him. He didn’t want to offend him by trying to take a closer look at the tech. A general guess that his speech was helped along by some sort of steam-powered mechanism involving those attachments was the best Henry’s imagination could supply. But he saw no hint of steam exhaust in the man’s vicinity.

Curious. I wonder if Vesta has ever seen such a contraption.

Entangled Earth by David Lea

Release dtae: May 30, 2018
Subgenre: Apocalyptic Science Fiction

About Entangled Earth:

Physics isn’t easy. Rule number one should always be ‘Don’t Destroy The World’. Sometimes science doesn’t follow the rules.

An experiment gone wrong means the Earth only has days left before it is torn apart by an invisible parallel world. Everyday activities become waves of destruction as the influence of the parallel world devastates the planet. Unstoppable, invisible cars plough through buildings, flocks of unseen birds tear people apart. When death is round every corner, what hope does anyone have?

Physicist Mia Green finds herself stuck in Paris, in the middle of the unnatural disaster. With calamity only ever a step away, she has to get home to England to find her family and stop the experiment that’s ending the world, but that’s easier said than done when the entire world has become an invisible and unpredictable puzzle filled with unseen danger?

Excerpt:

The golf course seemed to sit above the ground on the other side and so looked relatively untouched compared to the city. Occasionally they would hit the top edge of an invisible sloped roof poking up a few feet out of the ground but they were easily bypassed or scaled if Bruce was feeling adventurous. Progress was relatively fast. The only thing they had to watch out for was the strange indentations left in the grass by the movement of cars burrowing like mechanical moles deep under the earth beneath them and the rumbling of the moving earth meant they were easy to spot coming. Then even those stopped appearing. They had become strangely accustomed to the strange invisible world around them and now the silence and calm was slightly uneasy. The calm didn’t last long. Up ahead of them a sudden burst of soil plumed out of the ground and was followed by a thump as a perfectly circular eight-inch hole appeared in the ground nearby. A few seconds later it happened again, a plume followed by a hole, further away this time and off to their right. They all stepped back, wary of the earth erupting underneath them.
“What do you think it is?” asked Abraham.
“No idea,” said Bruce. Mia just shrugged.
They watched for a few minutes fascinated by the strange phenomenon. The ground where the eruptions were happening was clearly unstable, small ripples seemed to flow around it like miniature versions of the car trails they’d seen from the tower. Every few seconds the earth would erupt and then a hole would appear.
“It’s a football match!” said Abraham suddenly, looking pleased with himself. “They must be a way below us here and the eruptions are the ball. You can see them running about.”
Once the idea was out it was obvious he was right. The odd rippling ground mapped out a large rectangle roughly the shape of a football pitch.
“Come on, let’s not stay to find out who wins. Soccer’s a stupid game anyway,” said Bruce.
They edged their way around the match, gradually approaching a bank of trees that marked the boundary of the golf course. They made their way through the trees and emerged onto a deserted road.
“Signpost. Is that good?” said Bruce, nudging Mia and pointing up ahead.
Mia looked up and saw the sign. Calais, 265km. “Calais! We’re going the right way! Bruce, you are a fucking genius!”
“Yeah, only two hundred and fifty kilometres, the English Channel and half of England to go. We’d better start walking.”
Below the sign for Calais was another sign. The name of whatever town it was pointing towards had been punched out of the metal leaving a big hole. The sign just said “ere 2km”. “ere” was between them and the coast. They started walking.
