About This Would Be Paradise, Book 2:

Community connotes safety and togetherness--or does it?

Bailey and Chloe head back on the road, where they come across strange markings belonging to a group intent on bloodshed and abduction. With this heinous enemy lurking in the shadows, they seek help in new and old friends along the way.

When they arrive at Hargrove, nothing is what it seems inside the makeshift, post-apocalyptic community. People are turning up dead, and for once, zombies aren't the ones to blame. Fingers are pointed, everyone is a suspect, and no one is safe outside or inside these walls.

Excerpt:

I ducked to the side, hoping they hadn’t seen me. My heart raced like it wanted out of my chest. I peeked back out when the flashlight beam no longer shone in the window. The two men had weapons on their belts, which I’d failed to notice at first glance. They broke apart and the strangers headed for the front door.
I swallowed. This was bad news. But what the hell do I do?
I quietly shut the bedroom door where Chloe was sleeping and decided to find Roy, fear flooding my system. I reached the apartment door as a gunshot blasted downstairs and someone screamed. I threw the front door open and found others sticking their heads out in the hallway.
“Get back in your rooms and lock the door!” I commanded.
One by one, the doors closed and the heads disappeared. Heavy footfalls came up the stairs and one of the strangers hit the landing fast. His stare whipped down the hallway, his eyes locking with mine. Panicking, I slammed the door shut and flipped the deadbolt. I backed up a few feet when the door handle twisted. The door vibrated with a loud bang as he rammed against it.
“What is that?” Chloe asked, her eyes wide.
“Get back in your room and hide!” I pointed and she scurried back inside her bedroom.
I retreated farther as the banging intensified. With one last hit, the door flew open, landing flat on the scuffed floor. The hinges and locks had been forced out of the wall, the aged wood unable to withstand the barrage. The intruder fell with the door but was already getting up. He looked up at me, no expression on his face, just determination. Without a word, he started towards me. I turned and ran to the sofa bed, the intruder on my heels.
I needed something to use as a weapon and my gun was stashed away in my backpack. Fucking think of something!
I spotted the knitting paraphernalia in the bag on the floor and dashed over the sofa bed. I grabbed one of the metallic needles sticking out, then rolled to the other side of the bed, but realized I’d trapped myself. The man stood on the other side of the pullout couch, mirroring my movements as I moved from side to side like a cornered animal. He knew that I knew I had nowhere to go. He placed a boot on the bed and climbed up. I tried to run around the end of the bed, but he lunged for me.
We hit the wall and fell to the floor, him half landing on top of me. My whole side exploded in pain from the impact, and I yelled out. He grunted as if in pain, which confused me, since I was the one who’d taken the brunt of the tackle. I struggled with everything I had but eventually registered that he was slowly slipping off me. He lifted his head, his face pale, and then he looked down. I followed his gaze. The knitting needle was sticking out of his chest.
Hot blood poured from the wound and trickled down my arm. He wheezed, and with a final shove, I got him off me. He rolled onto his back, the needle protruding from his chest. I shuffled back from him just in case. His hands were shaking pointlessly beside the knitting needle; he must have been in shock. His breathing was labored and he spewed blood with each exhale. I probably hit a lung.
He’d run headlong into the sharp end of the weapon, taking himself out. That could have been me had I been holding the needle the other way.
I could be the one dying right now. My veins froze with liquid nitrogen at the thought.
My attention flew to the busted door when it groaned from added weight. The other stranger was standing on it. He took in the scene with a passive face, his eyes landing on his fallen comrade and my retreating form. Now what do I do?
“Bailey, are you okay?” The bedroom door inched open and my heart leaped into my throat.
The man watched Chloe appear in the bedroom doorway, and I screamed as loud as I could, getting to my feet, “RUN!”
The man sprinted toward the bedroom as the door slammed shut. In my fear-addled state, I managed to rip the needle from the chest of the man on the floor. He groaned and blood gushed from the wound, the needle no longer clogging the hole. I ran for the other man; my only concern was to stop him from getting to Chloe.
I tackled him with all the force I could create, swiping at his face with the bloody needle. He was far stronger than I was and shoved me back, flinging me to the small kitchen floor. I slid back until my head connected with a hard corner. Dots of light and blackness coated my vision.
He stepped toward me, then must have thought differently, because he went back to the bedroom door. I tried to call out but my voice wasn’t working. My consciousness wavered, darkness cascading over my eyes. The last thing I heard was a scream before I drowned in blackness.

About N.D. Iverson:

N. D. Iverson is a young author trying to find her niche in the world. She has a business degree - to which she is still trying to find a practical application for. She has bounced from half-baked ideas of becoming a forensic pathologist (cut short when the option for attending an autopsy came up and she rather quickly decided maybe that wasn't for her), a member of a rock band (sadly, neither she nor her friends could play instruments or sing, not that it's a requirement these days...), and many more.

This Would Be Paradise is her first completed novel, which has started a chain reaction of one-too-many book ideas dancing around in her head. She plans on wrangling in these ideas and turning them into something readable.

The Young Vampire's Survival Guide (New Breed Vampires, Book 1) by Lucy Eldritch

Release date: March 28, 2016
Subgenre: Urban fantasy

About The Young Vampire's Survival Guide:

It started with his death.

Student Robert James never asked to be bitten. He didn't want to be the leader of a new breed of vampires. Thing is: he wasn't offered a choice.

Survival and destiny combine when Robert finds himself under threat from a mysterious cult known as the Dawn Warriors. Within months, many of those he cares about are dead and he vows to fight back without mercy. Robert unearths terrible truths and confronts eternal evils that threaten to break him. He may not succeed in defeating the Dawn Warriors, but he has no choice but to try.

'The Young Vampire's Survival Guide' is the first book in the 'New Breed Vampires' book series. Described as "Anne Rice meets Kelley Armstrong", it is set in London and Manchester and written in British English. It's gruesome, compelling, horrifying and uplifting vampire fiction.

Excerpt:

It was probably the fifth Jaegerbomb that did it. Or the sixth. Whichever, I couldn't remember much about that, the last night of my life.
I recall turning up at Banshee, a rabbit warren nightclub packed to the rafters with willing Goths of both sexes whose sense of propriety worked in inverse proportion to the amount of rum and cokes they consumed. Even the watered-down rum and cokes for which the Banshee was rightfully infamous.
The evening got a little blurry around 3 a.m. There was a taxi or, maybe, some other kind of black vehicle. I recall two girls. One of whom may have been called Leticia or Delicia or something. Damn it. She might have been called Delicatessen for all I could remember the next morning.
As it turned out, Delicatessen would have been the perfect name for this particular individual. Note to my twenty year old self and others: beware the super hot, curvy Goth chick who seems unnaturally interested in you despite the presence of a couple of minor rock stars salivating in the vague direction of her cleavage. Her 'unnatural' interest may well turn out to be exactly that.
When I awoke the next day, I discovered myself naked, and covered in blood.
I wasn't an expert in blood - not then - but it was mine. There was a weeping wound in my neck. Strangely, it didn't hurt much. I presumed the anaesthetic properties of Jaegermeister were working their magic. I said a prayer to Curt Mast, thanking him for his invention.
Then, and only then, I took the trouble to look around me. At that point I started to get scared. Terrified, in fact.
Next to me was a woman; also naked, also covered in blood. But very, very dead. Her stomach had been torn apart and her entrails stuffed between her legs.
She was missing half an arm, and the bottom part of her left leg was twisted so badly, her foot pointed in the wrong direction.
Even now, countless years later, I still pictured her ruined face, so fresh in my mind. All her teeth had been removed but the gaping, bloodied maw of her mouth was smiling. Smiling and, there's no other way to put it, happy.
Worse still was the note. Impaled on some kind of stake driven through the woman's heart, it had 'Rob James' - my name - written on it. The handwriting was that of an old, old woman. Like someone who had suffered a stroke.
My first thought was 'I've got to get the hell out of here'. Curiosity overcame me though, so, hands shaking, I opened the note. Things were never the same again. Within one month, it cost the life of my best friend. Within a year, hundreds had died. All because of me.

About Lucy Eldritch:

I'm Lucy. I write paranormal horror urban fantasy vampire fiction set mainly in Manchester (the one in the UK, not the one in New Hampshire) and London. I also love red wine, but I suspect that's not really something I should mention. Not professional. Something like that. So, consider it un-mentioned.

Also remaining un-mentioned is my love for synonyms involving Châteauneuf-du-Pape (I suspect it's the red wine thing). Oh, and my equal love for really terrible horror B-movies. And I don't mean in a suitably ironic post-modern way. I do genuinely love those movies. Nope, I'm far too professional to mention either of these things. Thank God: I wouldn't want you to get the wrong impression of me.

Indie Speculative Fiction of the Month for March 2016

Indie Speculative Fiction of the Month
It’s that time of the month again, time for “Indie Speculative Fiction of the Month”.

So what is “Indie Speculative Fiction of the Month”? It’s a round-up of speculative fiction by indie authors newly published this month, though some February books I missed the last time around snuck in as well. The books are arranged in alphabetical order by author. So far, most links only go to Amazon.com, though I may add other retailers for future editions.

Once again, we have new releases covering the whole broad spectrum of speculative fiction. We have space opera, military science fiction, science fiction romance, paranormal romance, fantasy romance, epic fantasy, urban fantasy, horror, post-apocalyptic fiction, vampires, wizards, demons, alien invasions, flying saucers, telepathic space pirates, monstruous conspiracies, dead druids, magical wars, royal bodyguards, gods in the modern world and much more.

As always, I know the authors at least vaguely, but I haven’t read all of the books, so Caveat emptor.

And now on to the books without further ado:

Ishtar's Blade by Lisa BlackwoodIshtar’s Blade by Lisa Blackwood:

Warrior.
King’s confidant.
Avenging blade of the Goddess Ishtar.

Iltani asked to be none of these things. Yet fate does not ask permission when she weaves souls upon destiny’s loom.

On the day of Iltani’s birth, an assassin tried and nearly succeeded in ending the line of the gryphon kings. Out of that bloodshed, an unbreakable bond was forged between child-king and goddess-chosen infant, and from that pivotal moment forward, Iltani was never farther from King Ditanu than his shadow. Not until her training to become Ishtar’s Blade required her to leave.

After four brutal years of training, Iltani now returns to court as Ishtar’s Blade and takes up her role of king’s shadow—a dangerous position in a court where the threat of another assassination is but a blade’s width away. But for the chance to stand at the side of her beloved king, she will endure the dangers of court intrigues, assassins, and political maneuverings.

Lovers' Lane by Cora BuhlertLovers’ Lane by Cora Buhlert

1956. After a sock hop at the local high school gym, teenagers Betty and Cody drive out to Lovers’ Lane together. Betty knows only too well that good girls don’t go to Lovers’ Lane with boys. But Cody is her one true love and besides, he swore that he’d love her forever or may he be struck down where he stands. But then, an alien invasion shows Betty just what Cody’s word is truly worth…

This is a story of “The Day the Saucers Came…”, a loosely connected series of eyewitness accounts of a B-movie type alien invasion in 1956.

Caugzht in the Dream by Eva ChaseCaught in the Dream by Eva Chase:

Mateo Jimenez is haunted by the death of his first girlfriend, and his fear of repeating past mistakes has cost him personal relationships and now his job. While his colleagues protect L.A. from the demonic Glowers, he’s been demoted to office work.

He isn’t prepared to be so tempted by Kess, who uses her supernatural talents to bring his most buried desires to life. As he struggles to keep the upper hand, he discovers he can provoke human emotions in the demon, but the more warmth and kindness Kess offers, the more confused his own feelings become. No longer sure what’s an act and what’s real, Mateo sees a chance to stop the Glowers for good. But first he must decide whether trusting Kess is the key to succeeding or the greatest betrayal he could ever commit.

The third book in The Glower Chronicles, a steamy New Adult paranormal series.

Your Name, In Fire by Kera EmoryYour Name, In Fire by Kera Emory:

Connor Black doesn’t believe in the supernatural, and that’s about to bite him in the ass.

Connor’s life gets interesting when a new writer joins his video game studio. Sparks fly; Wendy is pretty, intelligent, and definitely into Connor—but careful never to reveal much about herself.

And before long, Connor has his own secrets to worry about: a tattooed stranger attacks and nearly kills him, giving no explanation. Stressed and sleep-deprived, with the looming deadline of a multi-million-dollar video game launch weeks away, Connor just doesn’t have time to deal with ‘weird’.

But when the evidence trail of an horrific crime begins to lead back to Connor himself, Connor must seek out answers to the questions he’s been avoiding, even if it means risking his own life and sanity—and the lives of those around him.

Shadow Play by Domino FinnShadow Play by Domino Finn:

I’m Cisco Suarez, and a week ago I was dead.

Cursed into serving a clandestine shadow group, I have a lot of blood on my hands. Good thing I also have a juvenile problem with authority. I’m not taking orders anymore, and the first thing on my bucket list is bringing them down.

If I’m good at anything, it’s looking in dark places. But I’ve got shadows of my own. Horrific deeds coming back to haunt me, and not the metaphorical kind of haunting, either. I’m talking ghosts, mages, and that thing with the glowing red eyes.

Just goes to show you, it really is true what they say. What goes around comes around. I only hope to give more than I get.

Is resurrection overrated or what?

Humanity cannot stop them. Not without help. Captain Dryker’s only hope is to forge an alliance with mankind’s greatest enemy, the savage Tigris.

One maverick captain, an unlikely crew, and an aging vessel are all that stand between humanity and the Eradication.

A dangerous secret that could destroy everything…
But how can Sanah trust Dem with her life? Especially when he’d kill her if he knew the truth.

Pirate Bound is a short prequel novel to the Telepathic Space Pirates series. It is a standalone story within the series.

Excerpt:

Sanah knew she’d fallen asleep when she found herself standing barefoot beneath a Denuvian orange sun, grass the same color and texture as red velvet brushing against her ankles. Beside her, water cascaded over crystalline rock, rushing past trees with diamond-shaped, copper leaves, and into a deep lake surrounded by glittering sand. Branches laden with sweetly fragrant flowers swayed in the breeze above her head.
Her hair blew across her face, and she realized it was down, loose around her shoulders. She almost never wore it that way—the thick curls were unruly enough as it was, often escaping whatever attempt she made to control them. She looked down at herself and saw a short kimono in rich cobalt blue from her own closet, abandoned back home. It was one of her favorite pieces, but…
“I’ve never been to Denuvia,” she said aloud, turning a slow circle. The popular vacation world was on her list, but far outside of her reach, even before she fled her old life. This was too vivid for a normal dream.
“Stop it, Niall. Right now.” This wasn’t the first time she’d been pulled into a dream that was anything but.
“Who’s Niall?”
The unfamiliar voice had her swinging around, and she gasped, shocked. A naked man walked out of the lake, water sluicing off his fantastically fit body with each step he took. His skin was pale and smooth. Black hair ruffled in the breeze, long enough to hang into eyes a striking, intense blue. He was beautiful and definitely not Niall.
Niall had never sent anyone else into one of these not-dreams before. Not even to try to pair her up with one of the men he’d vetted and approved for her. Niall had never understood how her gift made maintaining a relationship difficult. He saw the right partnership as both taking care of her and also solidifying their family’s place within the organization. Sanah couldn’t believe that, after all of his past failures, even Niall could be so ridiculous as to believe a handsome, naked man could convince her to see things his way.
Panic fluttered through her. Unless his only goal was to distract her, however briefly. If Niall wasn’t here, with her…
“Where’s Nayla?” she demanded.
“She’s exactly as you left her.” The handsome stranger shrugged. “A little alarmed that she can’t wake you, but otherwise perfectly fine. I thought it best if we conversed privately.”
“You thought? Just who are you? Where’s Niall?” Sanah crossed her arms, aware the gesture was defensive, even as she tried to sound authoritative. “I’m not dealing with anyone but him.”
The stranger strode closer, and Sanah strove valiantly to keep her eyes on his face as he stepped from the water to the sand, his footfalls leaving indentations behind him. She didn’t bother to back away. The telepath controlling this dreamscape didn’t need the appearance of physical proximity if he wanted to hurt her.

Carysa Locke is the pseudonym for writing team Carysa Locke and MaLea Holt, two best friends who have been creating imaginary worlds together for more than twenty years. Carysa is a high school English teacher, and MaLea helps support families with special needs children. You might say, they work as super heroes in their day jobs!

Their obsession with pirates and adventure goes back many years, when they started another hobby together - costuming. They regularly attend Ren-faires and Pirate Festivals. They currently reside in the Pacific Northwest with their families, where they still routinely roleplay and costume together, when they aren't too busy working on the next novel.
