Chasing Redemption by Bruce Fottler

Re-release date: November 23, 2015
Original release date: Januar 18, 2012
Subgenre: Military science fiction

About Chasing Redemption:

A tragic collision. Twelve lives lost. The wreckage of a history-making space vessel lies scattered across the moon's surface. Captain Ben Wildes, the pioneer of Saturn, and a rising star in the Earth Space Defense force, is found negligent after a deeply politicized trial.

A year later, Ben receives a surprising opportunity to redeem his suspended career. He's provisionally reinstated to investigate the fate of a missing commercial space mining vessel last reported an area that's perilously close to a sensitive territorial line. The incident requires a careful, firsthand investigation. Corroboration of an attack could easily breach long-standing treaties between two superpowers, which would lead to war.

As the mission unfolds, Ben uncovers shocking secrets with alarming ramifications, and quickly learns that chasing redemption is far more perilous than he ever anticipated.

Excerpt:

Before opening the door, Ben took a quick glance into a mirror in the cramped entryway. He brushed his hands through his slightly graying bed-hair in an attempt to look more presentable. With the touch of a button, the door quietly slid open and Ben was greeted by a crisp salute.
“Sir, may I please enter?”
“Sure,” Ben replied and waved him in, forgetting to return the salute.
“Thank you, sir,” Lieutenant Beroni replied and walked past him into the entryway. Ben closed the door and gestured for Beroni to follow him into the living room.
“So, why would JAG (Judge Advocate General) have you out delivering subpoenas at this hour?”
“Subpoenas? No, sir, I've been ordered to escort you to an urgent briefing with Admiral Foster.”
Ben paused for a moment as he tried to overcome a sudden wave of astonishment that rolled through his mind. It took a concerted effort for his drowsy thoughts to make sense of what he'd just been told.
“Foster?” Ben finally muttered and then noticed that Lieutenant Beroni's uniform lacked the familiar JAG insignia.
“Yes, sir.” Beroni cracked a wry smile, as though he’d been Ben’s best friend for years. “The big guy himself.”
“Right now?”
“As soon as you can get ready, sir. I’m instructed to wait and escort you there.”
“Escort? Is there some sort of trouble?”
“Trouble?” Beroni’s affable voice grew confused. “No, sir, not that I've been told, but they never tell us gophers much of anything.”
Ben nodded. “Do I at least have some time to shower and get ready?”
“It shouldn't be a problem, sir, but I'd advise against a Hollywood-shower.”
“Not known for those,” Ben quipped as he relaxed himself. “Please have a seat. The entertainment center is over there if you want.”
“Thank you, sir.”
Ben retreated into his bathroom for a quick shower. Lieutenant Beroni sat down on the couch in a cramped and modestly decorated living room. Out of curiosity, he looked around to size up this captain that the supreme commander of the ESD (Earth Space Defense) wanted to retrieve under escort, and with no prior notice.
Captain Benjamin Wildes was a name that he knew well. A media circus had closely followed the once revered captain of the famous RV MCKINLEY. They circled over him like buzzards in the aftermath of the accident and during the short trial that followed. Once it was over, Captain Wildes, a name no longer heading into history books, had all but disappeared. The news cycle quickly dropped him and moved on to other stories.

The Initiative: In Harm's Way (The Initiative Book 1) by Bruce Fottler

Release date: May 13, 2015
Subgenre: Technothriller, Conspiracy

About The Initiative: In Harm's Way:

Sam Maxwell hates his bland, dead-end job at a company that's little more than a labyrinth of cubicles. Seeking a better position, the Blanchard Corporation quickly extends him a surprisingly generous job offer. But something mysterious is lurking beneath the prestigious veneer of this multi-billion dollar technology giant. After accepting the offer, Sam's life is surreptitiously evaluated by a board of directors who are anxious to recruit candidates for their clandestine consortium. To those already part of this consortium, it's simply known as The Initiative. To Sam, it's the start of a perilous venture to help protect one of the most closely guarded secrets in modern history.

 Excerpt:

Once Sam was on his way down to the lobby, Christine walked down the hallway and found Walt standing at a large window overlooking the front parking lot. They watched Sam leave the building and walk to his car.
“So?” Christine asked.
“I have to admit, he gave me a much better impression than I expected.”
“Told you so.”
Walt turned to Christine and looked her over. “I see you went with the tight red outfit.”
“Too much?”
“I think it worked fine.”
“It's my go-to for these pitches,” Christine confessed as she tugged at the backside of her skirt. “I'm always concerned I'm getting a little too old to pull it off anymore.”
“Oh, you still have it,” Walt teased with a gleaming smile.
Christine gave a dismissive smirk as they turned to watch Sam drive away. “So, do you think we hooked him?”
“Oh, yes. No doubt that kid thinks he just won the damn lottery.”
“I saw some doubt.”
“Really? I'll bet you a hundred dollars he'll accept by the end of Wednesday.”
“Wow, a hundred? You're that sure?”
“With what he drove out of the parking lot? He's a typical post-graduate who's got a lot of school loans to pay back, but wants to upgrade at the same time. The way he eyed those other cars as he walked by them told me everything I needed to know. His mind is already at a car dealership.”
“You seem to have him all figured out.”
“Because I already know him. I look at him every day in the mirror. So, what about that bet?”
Christine laughed. “A hundred? I've learned to stop taking those bets with you. Do you think it's even worth our time to poison his other interviews?”
“Don't bother. He's all ours.”

Guest post - Bruce Fottler on Popular Apocalyptic Events

My main character in Paladin's Odyssey scoffed over the absurdity of tired doomsday clichés in apocalyptic tales of our era. The inspiration behind this came from the abundance of post-apocalyptic movies that have come out over the years. While they range from compelling to just plain silly, there's no denying that we have a curious interest in the demise of our species.

But what are the most popular apocalyptic events in movies these days? I recently came across a list of the top post-apocalyptic films (on IMDB.com) and thought it would be interesting to identify the apocalyptic event in each movie to see what might be keeping us up at night.

Note: My list is a consolidation of the top IMDB picks, as some franchise sequels/prequels showed up more than once. In these cases, I noted that all sequels/prequels movies are included.

1. The Hunger Games (includes sequels/prequels). It's never said what happened to civilization before the establishment of Panem.

2. The Maze Runner (2014): Much like “Hunger Games”, the apocalyptic event is undefined.

3. The Planet of the Apes (includes sequels/prequels): “You maniacs! You blew it up!” Who can forget Charlton Heston's meltdown at the end of the 1968 classic?

4. X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014): Machines built to exterminate mutants turn against everyone.

5. Snowpiercer (2013): A failed climate-change experiment kills all life on the planet.

6. The Terminator (includes sequels/prequels): “I'll be back.” Skynet takes over and seeks to exterminate the human race.

7. Mad Max (includes sequels/prequels): Civilization breaks down leading to war over dwindling resources.

8. The Matrix (includes sequels/prequels): Machines enslave the human race and use them as a power source.

9. Cloud Atlas (2012): “The Fall" is a largely-unexplained apocalyptic event.

10. Oblivion (2013): (Spoiler alert!) Aliens harvesting our planet.

11. Zombieland (2009): Zombies, Twinkies shortage, and the death of Bill Murray!

12. The Rover (2014): A global economic collapse.

13. I Am Legend (2007): A cure for cancer inadvertently creates a deadly plague, while turning a small percentage into monsters.

14. Warm Bodies (2013): Zombies, love, and a cure.

15. Total Recall (2012): Earth is almost uninhabitable (not sure why, and it's not the same premise of the 1990 original).

My observations:

Overall, I can think of several other great movies that should have ranked higher on this list, but it's just a snapshot of what's popular today among IMDB voters.

It's interesting to note that the underlying apocalyptic event in the top two movies is undefined. These stories instead focus on their present circumstances. It shows that a strong, engaging story doesn’t need to explain the apocalyptic event behind the narrative.

The most reoccurring apocalyptic event is machines turning on humans. Hey, I've always been suspicious of Skynet myself. Did I just hear a laugh coming from my laptop speakers?

I found it interesting that Zombie-themed movies didn't rank higher the list. Perhaps this is a sign that the zombie sub-genre is showing fatigue?

It surprised me that the less popular apocalyptic events are a plague and economic collapse (which doesn’t bode well for Paladin's Odyssey being made into a movie). Besides war, I think that these represent the most plausible of the apocalyptic scenarios on the list. Maybe we just don't like too much reality in our movies?

And finally, why are aliens always trying to kill us off and steal our planet?

What do you think of the list?

Interview with Bruce Fottler, author of Paladin's Odyssey

This week, Bruce Fottler, author of post-apocalyptic thriller Paladin's Odyssey, answers those tricky Speculative Fiction Showcase interview questions...

Apple or PC?

PC all the way. Nothing against Apple, but I've spent too many years in corporate finance positions where PC's were always used (while creating new cover-sheets for TPS reports). These days I'm no longer cool enough to own an Apple. They watch out for people like me at the Apple stores. I'm never allowed inside.

Do you use Scrivener or Word?

Neither. I use OpenOffice. The price was right.

Do you have any pets? Do they influence your writing?

We rescued a pure white cat from our local shelter last year. Her name is Isis, which is an unfortunate name to have these days. She's very pretty, but not very smart and spoiled rotten. When I see her lounging around like royalty, it motivates me to get writing, promoting, or just do something.

Would you rather see your stories on the big screen or the little screen?

Big screen, for sure. Back in high school, my buddy and I were aspiring film-makers nicknamed “Lucas and Spielberg.” We thought we were destined to someday make the next summer blockbuster movie. But sadly, for every future Lucas and Spielberg, there are hundreds of hopefuls (like us) that never make it. So now I write my stories as though they might someday make it to the big screen. Hey, I can still dream.

Are you hooked on any of the shows on the sci-fi channel? If so, which one(s)?

I loved Battlestar Galactica (remake, not original), SG-1, and yes, even SGA. These days I hardly tune in to sci-fi, or “SyFy” as it's now known. I lost interest once they misspelled their name and shifted their focus to reality shows & wrestling. Sad, it's sort of like how MTV stopped playing music videos.

Do you own copies of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings DVDs? The extended version? Do you ever watch them?

I own the extended version and think these movies rank among the best ever made. I've watched them too many times to count, mostly because my sons (and their cousins) used to watch them over and over again. If DVD's could wear out, ours must be pretty close. I wonder, do they come with a lifetime warranty?

Have you seen the first two parts of the The Hobbit? Are you planning to see the final installment?

I've seen both Hobbit movies, and my youngest son will probably try to drag me to an opening night showing of the third installment. I think they're pretty good, but it's hard to top the LOTR movies.

Are you a Luddite? Or do you prefer to be on the bleeding edge of technology?

I still place closer to the bleeding edge of technology. When I was younger, I though technology was too far behind. I'd dream of having what we have today. However, as I get older, technology seems to race further and further ahead of me. Someday I'll probably turn to the Luddite side, once Skynet tries to nuke us all.

Are you--or have you ever been--a gamer?

Nope, I never got addicted to that. Now I get to play the old-fashioned parent trying to pry his kids away from video games to do their homework.

Have you ever been to Starbucks?

Actually, never. I much prefer Dunkin' Donuts. Yeah, I know those are fightin' words to some.

Coffee or Tea or Water?

Coffee! Caffeine is an essential nutrient for writers.

Espresso, Drip, Instant, or French Press?

Um,.. Mr. Coffee?

Do you wear socks?

Only when they're clean and match something I'm wearing. My wife trained me well.

What are you wearing right now?

Mostly? A spoiled white cat who thinks she owns my lap, and her fur that shed all over my clothes.

Does life fascinate you?

I don't know how one could be a writer if it didn't.

Do you recycle?

Perhaps too much. Wait, you're talking about writing, right?
