Subgenre:  Children's Sword & Sorcery,  Fantasy & Magic for Children

About The Awesome Adventures of Poppy and Amelia:

Poppy and Amelia didn't set out to be witches. That happened quite by accident, and it's a secret they must keep from their family and friends. Then there is Mia, the new girl in class. Pale, strange and deadly serious, she's in need of a couple of equally weird friends. Poppy and Amelia are happy to oblige. Together, the three of them must thwart the plans of the sinister Miss Mortimer and her evil companions.

The Awesome Adventures of Poppy and Amelia developed during lockdown, when Misha was helping her granddaughter Maddy with her English lessons via Skype. Over the weeks, they worked on the story that became the kernel of the book, about two girls who become witches by accident. When Misha suggested making the story into an eBook, Maddy said she wanted the story to be a proper book (with her picture on the back!) that she could share with her friends when she return to school. In due course it was published by Penkhull Press, with Jan Edwards as editor and a cover design by Peter Coleborn, following Maddy’s suggestions.

All profits from sales of The Awesome Adventures of Poppy and Amelia go to Blood Cancer UK in memory of Posy Miller, Misha’s daughter and Maddy’s aunt, who died of leukaemia in 2002, aged 31. Though treatment for the condition has progressed a long way since then, they want to raise funds for research into a cure.

Excerpt:

Murmuring an opening spell Poppy clicked her fingers and pointed. The door was rusty but working together they managed to open it. Poppy clambered through and carefully lowered herself inside. Amelia wasn’t sure about breaking into someone’s house but she didn’t want to be left behind, so she climbed in after Poppy.

At first they thought the cellar was empty. Then Poppy switched on her phone.

“Oh!” she gasped, clutching Amelia’s arm.

In the middle of the room were three coffins. Two large ones and one smaller one.

“That’s Mia’s, in case you’re wondering.” A tall white figure with a beard floated through the wall. “I’m Grandpa Ghost and I’m very pleased to meet you.” He held out a transparent hand.

“Oh, for goodness sake, Grandpa, remember you’re a ghost. I’m Granny.” A smaller rounder ghost materialised. “Mia’s told us all about you.”

“Is she in there?” Poppy hardly dared to point at the coffins.

“Oh no, it’s not her bedtime yet,” Granny Ghost said.

“So she’s a vampire?” Amelia quavered.

“What’s wrong with that? Everyone’s different. What we look like or where we come from shouldn’t make any difference to the way we’re treated by other beings.”

“Of course not,” Poppy said.

“I’m glad we agree about that. If you want to see Mia come with us.”

The ghosts stepped back through the wall.

“Where do we go?”

“There.” Amelia pointed to a door.

The ghosts were waiting at the top of the cellar stairs and showed them into a bright white kitchen where Mia was sitting at the counter doing her homework.

“What are you doing here? You shouldn’t have come.” She glanced over her shoulder.

“Nonsense. They seem perfectly nice girls to me,” said the smaller ghost.

“I know but I’m not allowed visitors – oh no!” Mia jumped to her feet as her parents came in. “I’m sorry, I didn’t invite them. They just turned up.” “

We came to see if Mia was all right,” Poppy explained.

“That’s very kind of you. My name is Hera and this is Chris – and yes, we’re vampires.”
