The Vampire by Erme Lander

Release date:November 25, 2020
Subgenre: Paranormal romance

About The Vampire:

“I do not require your eternal love or devotion Ms Johnson, merely what is inside your veins.”

When Tina Johnson, single mother, forty, wakes up in an isolated castle in Central Europe she simply wants to return to her daughter as quickly as possible. She doesn’t expect to find that she has been kidnapped and brought into a world where power is the key to survival and sanity is an optional extra.

Tina discovers she has been watched for many years, she has a rare genetic structure that makes her attractive to vampires and has the possibility of living for well over a century, if she allows herself to become infected. Kalmár has stolen her and intends to keep her captive, hiding her from both her family and other vampires. Normality becomes a frightening place as Tina struggles to escape those holding her and to fights to keep her daughter, her lover and her freedom.

Those wanting teenage kicks and thrills had better stand aside. This is a story of a woman held hostage with only her own exhausted brain to help. The slow seductive burn of sleepless nights. The nightmare of a horrific reality setting in and the endless patience of a dark being who has time on his side.

Sitting somewhere between Anne Rice and Bram Stoker this is perfect for fans of paranormal romance that want something different to savour. The Vampire Duology is a modern twist on the classic vampire tale.

Please note that this duology consists of "A Dark Inheritance" and "A Dark infection" both available on Amazon as single books.

Excerpt:

Kalmár’s eyes watched her, like a cat watching a mouse, waiting for her to move. For a moment Tina returned his look, saw every detail, the huge black pupils in the dim light, the pale skin and the sharp crease of the folded collar against his neck.

The fire snapped a log in the grate and instinct took over. Her bare toes dug into the carpet and she launched herself towards the door. Quick as she was, he reacted faster, reaching out with a long arm to catch her. His fingers closed around her elbow, swinging Tina painfully round. She swiped at him with her other hand and gaped in stupidity, she’d missed. He slapped her, open handed across the face and released her to stumble backwards.

She hit her head against a bookcase and saw lights from the impact. Stunned that he’d hit her, she stood, dazed. He stepped forwards, took both her wrists in one large hand and pinned her there. His face was shadowed, his fingers cool and dry as he began to undo the neck of her shirt.

“No,” Tina whispered. As he ignored it, she tried louder, “No.” She attempted to struggle, to wriggle away, she couldn’t shift him. She pretended to faint, rolled up her eyes and went limp in the hope he’d loosen his grip and she could twist away. It didn’t work. She couldn’t think, didn’t know what to do, her mind blank with panic.

She cried out as he adjusted his grip, forcing her to stand. Kalmár undid her buttons and pulled the shirt collar out of the way. Twisting her arms around to her back, he dragged Tina up to his height, feet dangling off the floor and held her against the bookcase with his body. His free hand grasped her hair and pulled back her head, exposing her neck.

Cool flesh against hers and she felt his fangs slice in. She whimpered softly against him. Then long slow sucking, a monstrous baby feeding. The lights dimmed, haloed, the flickering of the fire beyond him. The dust settled, swirling in patterns. She could feel her heart thumping, working against him, refusing to give in.

Tina went limp with shock and his arms changed from holding her down to cradling her, keeping her upright against him. After what felt like an age he stopped, his tongue nuzzled at the wounds and licked them. He drew his head back. Inspected and licked again.

He picked Tina up easily, carried her over to a reading couch and lay her there. She stared at the ceiling unable to move. She could smell his scent everywhere, cloying with its intensity. Kalmár sat next to her and wiped his mouth with a clean white handkerchief. He reminded Tina of a cat, licking cream off its whiskers. Blood, thought Tina muzzily. My blood. She had no energy left to be anything other than faintly outraged at the sight.

He reached over, tilted her head to inspect her neck and grunted in satisfaction. Kalmár walked to the bell pull and rang. He was sitting in his chair and reading the abandoned newspaper when Wolfie appeared.

He peered over his glasses, “Ms Johnson will need food and water shortly.”

“How is she?” Wolfie sounded hesitant.

“Much as expected.” Kalmár went back to his paper, once more the picture of elegance and decaying wealth.

Excerpt:

Ignoring the look he was given, Ansell called to Nikos, “Wake your master.”

Nikos looked at Madame and then at Ansell. “How?”

Madame snarled, “Cut yourself, the smell of blood should do it.” Nikos looked nervous and hesitated. “Do it!” The order snapped across the room and jerked him upright. His olive skin went pale and he lurched out of the door.

“If he gets it wrong then Consort will drain him,” Ansell’s voice was mild.

“I do not care, I have had to deal with him for too long. He was never my choice.”

The casual dismissal of a human life by a creature who’d lost her own humanity years ago. Tina wondered if this was how she’d end up in years to come. She had a moment's disconnect, the man who held her and the other two in the room had lived so long that a human life was less than the span of a cat to them. All could snap her in two with ease. For the first time in years, she longed for the simple problems of human life and wondered how she’d managed to close her eyes to the strange existence she had. She looked at Kalmár, what would happen if she were given a way out, would she leave or would she fight to stay like the victim she’d seen in the news several weeks ago?

The silence lengthened and no one seemed willing to break it while they waited for Nikos to wake Consort. A red flash of lust screamed across Tina’s vision and she gasped. This wasn’t the normal waking, this was something else, fed by Nikos’ blood.

“You feel it too, good.” Madame smirked.

The hair rose on the back of Tina’s neck and she noticed the other vampires becoming more alert. Sasha, after glancing at Ansell, came to sit behind his chair, away from the door. Ansell had sat up, his eyes were still lazily hooded but there was an anticipation about him. Tina became aware of thuds in the passages a long way away and her heart began to beat harder. She could feel Kalmár's muscles tensing and his fingers had become still. He shifted to angle his body towards the door, partially shielding her.

The thumping came closer. A large heavy object was being dragged slowly across the wooden floors, the noise echoing through the corridors. A smashing sound, something had been broken. She winced, there were so many precious objects displayed, the casual opulence of decades.

Tina tried to control her breathing and failed, the tension between the three vampires rippled through her. Sasha looked white, her mouth a straight line, her eyes huge. She could normally sense vampires when they were close, whatever was coming didn’t have the same feel, there was a coldness flowing through the air. Stone and the drip of water, she pinched her arm and rubbed her hands against her jeans to ground herself.

A blow on the door, something trying to get in without the knowledge of handles, a child’s nightmare, her reality. She saw the door handle move and wondered which of the three inside had opened it.

Excerpt:

Later she lay on her bed, staring at the old-fashioned walls, not seeing them. Called herself a coward for not acting decisively and tried not to think about the horrendous intimacy of a man who fed from her, sucking her blood to survive. Brooding over the locked doors and being hundreds of miles away from friends and family. No way to contact them. She sank into a pit of despair.

Tina curled up under her bedclothes having refused all Wolfie’s entreaties to come down during the night and woke with a horror creeping over her. She couldn’t see anything in the dark room, her skin crawled as she tried not to panic.

She lay and feigned sleep. Tried to keep her breathing steady and strained her ears past the blood pounding through them. A soft rustle of clothing and she caught the smell of him. He was in the room with her, she frantically tried to work out where he might be. She had a lamp on the table next to the bed. As though shifting in her sleep, Tina rolled towards it. Her hand reached out and she smothered a shriek as her wrist was grasped by long cool fingers.

“You make this too easy Ms Johnson.” Trying to wriggle free, she slapped in his direction with her other hand. He took that wrist too and pinned her to the bed, pulling her head back by her hair to expose her throat. Tina froze and whimpered, expecting him to bite as his mouth came into contact with her. Kalmár merely held her down and brushed his lips against her neck.

Point made, he reached over and threw her clothes on top of her. “I expect you downstairs, Ms Johnson.” This time she heard his heels click as he walked to the door. She lay, panting and crying through helplessness. The thought of what he might do next drove her to switch the light on. The room was empty. Sniffing, Tina pulled her jeans on and wiped her face on her sleeve. She walked slowly to the library, hating herself for giving in but not daring to rebel any further.

Kalmár greeted her as she entered and gestured to a chair. She curled up, rebellion limited to glaring at him. He picked up his book and glasses and ignored the look. “You are easier to train than a dog Ms Johnson. You understand consequences.”

Past caring, she muttered back at him, “I wouldn’t train a dog like this. They end up hating you.”

He refused to look at her as he found his way to his bookmarked page, “I do not require your eternal love or devotion Ms Johnson, merely what is inside your veins.”
