Interview with Desireé Moon, author of the Black Oak Shifters series

The Speculative Fiction Showcase welcomes Desireé Moon, author of the Black Oak Shifters series:

    1. These days, most writers are glued to their laptops, tablets, and/or e-readers. A few still swear by print books and typewriters, the question is: Do you move at all?
Ha! Trust me, I’d like to just lie in bed all day, but that doesn’t get too much writing done. I’m an active person. Always have been. I enjoy pretty much anything about the outdoors. Plus, I have a dog. So, I’m moving about pretty frequently.

    1. Apple or PC?
PC. I want to get a Mac. Are you offering one?

    1. Do you use Scrivener or Word?
Word. I’ve got Scrivener on my laptop. Bought it during a sale. Still haven’t used it.

    1. Do you have any pets? Do they influence your writing?
If by pet you mean a little furry hellspawn… Yup, I got one of those. I’ve got a mutt named Mac. If he influenced my writing it would be hella boring. Pages and pages filled with characters sleeping, fart noises and barking at their own shadows.

    1. Would you rather see your stories on the big screen or the little screen?
Both, really. I think every writer dreams of that. I’d love to see the urban fantasy series I’m currently working on to be a TV Show—especially a cable or a streaming network, like Netflix.

    1. Are you hooked on any science fiction or fantasy TV shows? If so, which one(s)?
How much time do you have? Seriously. Sci-fi/Fantasy is my fave. Unfortunately, because writing is my job, I have very little time to just veg out like I used to. Mostly, I binge watch shows like The Flash (love it!), Gotham, Game of Thrones, American Horror Story and I’m looking forward to Westworld on HBO. I also like a lot of cartoons like Steven Universe, Adventure Time and One Punch Man.

    1. Do you own copies of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings DVDs? The extended version? Do you ever watch them?
I do own the whole trilogy, but only the basic editions. And yes, I probably watch the trilogy at least once a year, when I have down time. Usually around the holidays.

    1. Have you seen the The Hobbit trilogy?
You’re gonna hate me, but I’ve only seen The Desolation of Smaug.

    1. Your Black Oak Shifters series is a paranormal romance featuring were-grizzlies. What is it that draws you to shifters in general and bear shifters in particular?
Shifters are sexy as hell! They are driven by instinct. They know what they want. And best of all, they know how to get it. Were-bears are cool because they’re so strong and cuddly. Shifters have an interesting world that draws several parallels thematically to the real world. Many shifter novels describe how shifters are discriminated against or are marginalized for being different—which unfortunately, I know all too well.  The character in my new series is a were-panther, however.

    1. What are your favourite speculative fiction writers and books?
To spare you a long list, I’ll keep it short. Personally, I like a lot of dark sci-fi/fantasy/horror writers. One of my all time favorites is Robert McCammon. His writing is so visceral and gritty. Steven King, Joe Abercrombie, Justina Robson, Jennifer Ashley (for shifter novels). There are lots more, but that would literally take all the space of this interview.

    1. Are you a Luddite? Or do you prefer to be on the bleeding edge of technology?
A Luddite? Not at all. Bring on our robot overlords, please! I can’t wait for self-driving cars, lab grown beef, and affordable 3D printers. However, I feel policy wise, at least in the U.S., our society is not ready to manage all of the people who will be made redundant by advanced tech. I support a basic income for that reason.

    1. Are you--or have you ever been--a gamer?
Hell yes. I’d like to start up my own stream, actually. Future plan! I love Mass Effect, Halo, Little Big Planet, Okami, Metal Gear Solid (My favorite!), Last of Us, GTA, and I want to play the division when that comes out.

    1. What kind of foods do you eat? Are you a health-food-nut or is it strictly junk?
I love me some junk food, especially ice cream. I make a lot of homemade ice cream myself. However, I’m generally a healthy eater. I’ve only got one body, might as well treat it right. So, typically I eat a lot of beans and rice. Steamed vegetables, chicken meals—all of the boring stuff, ha!

    1. Do you cook? What is your best/favourite/most popular recipe?
Yes, I cook. The question is how well… I can whip up eggs PERFECTLY in pretty much any style. Sunnyside up, poached, scrambled or hard-boiled. Lots of compliments from friends about my egg-game. Eggs were a staple in my college days.

    1. Have you ever heard of or had a green smoothie? If you’ve ever had one, what did you think about ?
Yes. I down a few green smoothies every now and then. I prefer them to the fruit-based ones.

    1. Do you have a garden? Have you ever grown your own food?
Aww, I wish. No garden. I’d like to someday. I’ve been wanting to try my hand at hydroponic gardens.

    1. Have you ever been to Starbucks or any other coffee shop?
Of course, it’s kinda hard to avoid the place. However, we got some nice local coffee shops here in Atlanta (Woot!) like Octane Coffee or Dancing goats

    1. Coffee or Tea or Water? Espresso, Drip, Instant, or French Press? Bag or Looseleaf? Bottled, Filtered, Tap or Rainwater?
Coffee—by far! My coffee maker is on the fritz. I now drink instant. I know the coffee snobs are rolling their eyes at me, ha! But I really like Jacob’s instant coffee. Or, if I’m going on the cheap end, Kroger Instant coffee.

    1. Do you wear socks?
Yup, I wear them mismatched too. I even have socks for different holidays. It’s a staple gift from my friends.

    1. What are you wearing right now?
Ooooh, cheeky. I promise you it isn’t sexy. I’m wearing a sweatshirt and flannel. Yeah, I warned you.

    1. How often do you wash your hair?
I haven’t washed my hair in ten years. Kidding. I have an afro, so it’s a process for sure. It gets curly and frizzy and a hot mess, basically. I wash it once a week. But I love being natural. It makes me different.

    1. Do you do your own laundry?
Does making my dog do it count?

    1. Does life fascinate you?
Yes. The thing about life is one day you will die (That’s actually a title of a book, lol!). So you might as well live it up. Realize lots of things are out of your control. Don’t compare yourself to others. Don’t be judgemental. Be self-aware and mindful of your time. Work hard on the things you love. Take risks. Accept failure. Get up and try again. When I was a lot younger, I was more emo and less optimistic, but I realized it’s easy to be cynical. It’s much harder to believe and take a stand for something. I choose optimism.

    1. What would your animal totem be?
I’d like my totem to be a Raven.

    1. Do you recycle?
    Yes. Mostly.

    1. Do you do Yoga? Meditation? or Deep Breathing? Does it help you cope?
I don’t. I should. I’m not religious, but I really do like a lot of Buddhist philosophy. I think being present and self-aware is essential to living a good life. Sometimes, when I have way too much time on my hands (rare!), I have many existential crises, ha! But learning to be present and realizing all there is is the present—really helps to keep me focused.

    1. On a scale of 1-10, how eccentric are you?
    20. Ha!

    1. What’s your astrological sign?
    I’m a scorpio.

    1. Do you consider yourself a slave to the muse?
Nah, maybe when I was a much younger writer. Like in my high school days. I thought everything I wrote had to say something novel about the human condition. But now that writing is my job, I treat it like a job. I try to stay focused. I don’t wait to be inspired, because my landlord won’t wait to take my rent, ha! It has helped me stay detached from my writing. Usually, my goal is to write as fast and as much as possible in a month.

Thank you so much for the interview, Cora!

Tempted by a Grizzly (Black Oak Shifters, Book 3) by Desireé Moon

    Release date: September 24, 2015
    Subgenre: Paranormal romance

    About Tempted by a Grizzly

    Temptation has its drawbacks...

Nina is terrified for her alphas. After an accident, the humans now accuse Rafe of a crime he didn't commit. Rafe only wants to clear his name and protect his clan. Nina fears the worst, especially now that she has cubs of her own to protect. The humans move in to keep close surveillance on the werebears in Birch Valley. But it turns out, none of the shifters in Black Oak forest are safe from the humans.

Axle would do anything to keep Nina safe from harm. Even if it means risking his own life. But could her powerful grizzly alphas stop the humans from controlling their shifter way of life?

    Excerpt:

Rafe, Axle and Nina all looked out towards the crowd of humans shouting outside the clinic. A full silver moon shone over them all. Nina’s heart pounded in her chest, terrified by the mob of angry faces before her.
“These humans don’t seem too happy to see us. Why would they come all the way out here?” Axle asked, studying Rafe’s movements.
Rafe's violet eyes took on a glacier-like expression. He knew the humans wanted payback for the damage of the local general store. “Something happened,” Rafe replied.
Nina, on the other hand, was completely clueless. Nina wanted to make absolutely certain that Rafe wasn’t the cause of this. She stormed up to him.
“Tell me the truth. What happened?”
“I never should have challenged Gage in the race. He lost control of his bike and crashed into a general store owned by a human,” Rafe confessed.
Nina looked down at the two children swaddled tightly in pelts, already greatly fearing for their lives.
Nina looked at him seriously. “How could you let this happen?”
Nina brutally pummeled Rafe in his chest, even though his hard alpha body didn’t yield a single inch. Jade moved between them during the commotion.
“Let me take the little ones, they have no business being out here in the cold.”
Jade carried the two children off to safety. An opened wound filled Nina’s heart. She feared her children would become easy targets for ignorant humans. No matter how charming or how cunning she thought Rafe to be in the past, right now she couldn’t even look at him. Rafe hated looking at the sorrowful expression on her face. Her shining brown eyes almost filled with tears.
Axle wanted a rapid solution to make the humans scatter. His body burned with rage. He turned to Rafe.
“I told you to let me ride that race, but you had to be the fuckin’ hero. This is what happens…” he spat.
Axle narrowed his eyes in an attempt to see through the mist-like fall of snow, and better gauge the number of humans currently in his town. “We need to tell these damn humans to get the hell off our property!”
“No,” Rafe growled, worried that Axle would do something reckless, like storming the humans in an enraged frenzy.
Rafe knew the anger the humans harbored for the clan would only become more poisonous if the shifters behaved aggressively as well. He was responsible for Gage’s actions, which made him equally responsible of his crime. As such that meant he had to make amends with the community. He knew full forgiveness wasn’t an option. However, it would start building trust.
“You damn shifters!” one of the mob called out. “We know about the crime he committed.”
This is getting out of hand. Nina panicked. Rafe stepped up right in front of the Mayor.

In Love with a Grizzly (Black OakShifters, Book 2) by Desireé Moon

    Release date: September 24, 2015
    Subgenre: Paranormal romance

About In Love with a Grizzly

A wedding with werebears is one huge headache...

Nina Jacoby has been settling in with her new life as bride to both of the alpha grizzlies in Black Oak forest--Rafe and Axle Hart. And no doubt, both of her alphas have been keeping their gorgeous mate very occupied. However, not all of the werebears accept the weak and tiny human--forcing a huge rift that divides the clan. With less help around the lumberyard, Rafe is feeling pressure from all sides. Nina panics, questioning whether she made a mistake in adopting the werebear way of life. Despite all of the doom and gloom, Axle comes up with a secret plan of his own.

Will Nina finally feel accepted in her new home?

    Excerpt:

Nina gazed out of her window. Outside, poppy, ochre and copper colored leaves tumbled down the glass. Early fall arrived much faster than Nina expected. Still, the Alaskan cold remained and winter would be around the corner. She carefully grasped her free falling braids from her eyes. Not long ago, she got lost in the heart of Black Oak forest. Her plans never involved staying. Or, finding a home.
But that’s exactly what she found.
Getting used to the rough and tumble grizzly life certainly was a challenge. The werebears in the Birch Valley were very hard workers and they expected as much out of her. But when quitting time came, they knew how to cut loose and enjoy the simple pleasures in life. Given her past, and the hell she went through with her ex-husband, Nina cherished their loyal and honest way of life. She tugged on one of her long braids, daydreaming about her capable alpha shifters—Rafe and Axle.
She exhaled deeply reminiscing about how her alphas both held her this morning, peeling off her clothes, and taking their careful turns with her body. She recalled the sound of them both lowering their zippers… The rumble of a growl caught in their throats… The hot touch of their rough hands. Their pure shifter lust pulsing through their veins. Nina never thought she’d love two men—two alphas—at the same time. But she’d have it no other way.
The scent of fir trees wafted in when she slightly cracked open the kitchen window. It gave Nina a sense of calm. The other bears in the clan no longer saw her as some outsider, rather, she was the future of their survival. Soon she would be a mother to a litter of cubs of her own. But Nina didn’t want to think too far into the future. Giving birth and being a mother caused her a lot of worry.  Rafe had gone off to the main office, but Nina stared at Axle through the window working hard in the garden. He wore no shirt despite the morning chill.
Nina stepped out her door and padded out further into the garden.
“Axle!” Nina called, trying to see if Axle could hear her. “You’re always up so early…”
Axle circled his hulking body around. His red eyes glowering at her made her hitch a breath. A grin stretched across his face. He loved to see Nina first thing in the morning. Her hair usually looked wild and unruly. Afro curls fluttering in the direction of the wind. However, this time her hair had been tamed in bouncy sleek braids. The silk night gown she wore hugged every inch of her curves, driving his shifter lust into a frenzy.
“Someone has to get the work done around here,” he growled.
Nina snorted. “I’m not sure how much work actually gets done around here, to be quite honest,” she replied, teasing.
From behind, she wrapped her arms around the breadth of Axle’s shoulders.

Lost with a Grizzly (Black Oak Shifters, Book 1) by Desireé Moon

    Release date: September 24, 2015
    Subgenre: Paranormal romance

    About Lost with a Grizzly

Out in the cold and escaping from a horrific past...

Nina Jacoby makes a desperate escape and runs away from her abusive past. When she stops to catch her breath, she finds herself in Black Oak forest. A home to shifters in the icy Alaskan wilderness. She meets Rafe Hart--a grizzly who runs a lumber yard nearby. Immediately, he's entranced by her fuzzy curls, and luscious curves--eager to seek out a mate. But not if his brother Axle has anything to say about it!

Axle can't stand Nina and her weak-puny-human ways. The two of them hate each other instantly, but slowly Nina starts to chip away at his ice-cold heart. Nina's about to find out that living with grizzlies is not as easy as it seems. With these two bears at her beck and call, just how will poor Nina keep herself warm through those snowy winter nights?

     Excerpt:

A scream clogged in Nina’s throat. She had known that by running into the forest, she was putting her life in mortal danger. Feeling the blood chill in her veins, she suddenly imagined a beast ferociously ripping into her. She turned around slowly, expecting to see sharp claws and fangs.

Instead, she saw a tall man with dark blonde hair. He wore a flannel button down tucked into his very snug fitted jeans. On his feet were heavy boots, with large spikes to trudge through hard ice. His tanned biceps bulged out of the cuffed up sleeves of his shirt. Nina couldn’t look away from his darkening violet eyes and gawked at his tightly clenched jaw. In one hand, he toted a dull-edged axe.  He eyed her back before speaking with his warm voice.

“Careful, you oughta know you’re close to the shifter border. You need to turn back,” he warned her.

The mystery man sniffed the air, inhaling the scent of the woman. His eyes fixed on her smooth dark skin and he focused his gaze on her several purple-colored bruises.

He figured that wherever she came from, she had zero interest in going back. He could smell blood on her, and he snarled from his throat. The sweet smell of fresh blood made him have to fight his own urge of wanting to lick her body right then and there, taste it. When Nina inhaled, he could clearly see the soft peaks of her nipples pressing through the cloth of her nightgown. Nina backed away slowly—ready to run.

    “Are you lost?” he grunted.

Nina backed away, “No. I’m just running... I don’t know where. Are you going to hurt me? Who are you?”

His fingers tightened on the handle of the axe. He stepped closer into the flood of moonlight.  Humans were well aware that shifters existed, but most of the time they rarely intermingled; by law they had to stay in their own territories. The quaint Alaskan town of Mulberry had a special task force, known only as The Covenant, to make sure the beasts never strayed outside of the borders of Black Oak Forest.  People often got lost in Black Oak and never returned. To shifters, humans were mostly a nuisance. They brought more trouble than it was worth. But this human, in particular, had caught this shifter’s undivided attention.

“Don’t worry,” he said. “I’m not going to hurt you. My name is Rafe Hart, and I run a logging camp in Birch Valley—a few miles down the way. If you stay in this cold for too long, wearing so little, you'll suffer hypothermia,” Rafe said.

    “I can’t… I can’t feel my legs,” Nina replied at a whisper.

Nina already could hardly feel her fingers. Her entire body felt stiff—she was going numb. She collapsed on her knees into the icy grass.

Carefully, Rafe lowered his axe. He rushed over to her and scooped up her limp body. Nina could hear the sound of his heart pounding in his broad chest. He held her tight as he charged through the dark wood.
