Cut Down to Size (Once Giants, Book 3) by Eugene Kirk and Garan Mad

Release date: June 16, 2017
Subgenre: Military science fiction, Cyberpunk

About Cut Down to Size:

Someone is killing people in the name of profit… and it’s up to Tina and Doc to stop them.

Embarking upon a mission into IEA Madagascar, Tina and Doc encounter heavy opposition while defending a factory against a team of heavily armed mercs.

Outmanned and outgunned, their only chance for survival is to call a shaky truce based on an even shakier mercenary code of honor. But when a compromise can’t be reached, the future of both their company and their client, hangs in the balance. Pushed to the edge, Tina doubles down with a risky business move that could either see them raking in millions or winding up dead broke.

Or just dead.

With the stakes higher than ever, just how far will Tina go to win? Will she pull it off at the risk of compromising everything she believes in?

Or will she be the one finally cut down to size…

Excerpt:

Moses had the throttle cranked. The aerodyne’s turbine screamed above the wail of the wind as, below, the thick jungle canopy of Ronamafina National Park flew by like something on a high-speed assembly line.
Doc shouted above the din as he looked back at her. “Be ready for anything! We ain’t got much intel on this one.”
“More like no intel,” Tina muttered, checking over her gear. Uncertainty, anticipation, and dread combined to form a deadly cocktail within her mind. Heading blind into a combat zone was something she’d experienced only once before, and that was enough to know that this had the makings of a bad situation.
Tina squinted against the onrushing air, looking out over the blurred treetops and rolling terrain. Madagascar—she hadn’t even known it was part of the East African Empire. “Who the hell would waste their time attacking something way out here?”
“Shit if I know.” Doc pulled his dreadlocks into a ponytail, his silver-gray eyes glinting with focus against his deep mahogany skin. His overcoat billowed in the wind, revealing his camouflage fatigues underneath, as well as his usual arsenal of small arms and blades. “The locals say they’ve been hit twice already. Killed over two hundred civilians. We might actually get a chance to catch the bastards this time, so stay sharp.”
That thought caused even more adrenaline to spike.
“Approaching Mananjary,” Moses, their pilot, called over the comm from the cockpit. “Eleven o’clock.”
Tina shielded her eyes from the mid-morning sun as she looked for their landing zone. She made out a plume of gray-and-white smoke on the horizon, punctuated against a near cloudless sky. They’d be there soon. She checked the snugness of the 20mm rifle slung across her back and zipped her gray bodysuit to the neck.
Moses slid the aerodyne to a stop in midair, and Doc signaled for her to jump. “Go! Go!”
Tina grabbed hold of one of the spring-loaded tether lines at the door’s edge and leapt into the open air. The monofilament strand screamed behind her as her eight-foot, six-hundred-pound frame plummeted toward the earth. Her heartbeat pumped in her throat as the ground spun and grew rapidly. Hot wind and white smoke filled her senses, adding to the dizzying effect. With a touch of the brake, the tether reeled with a zip and arrested her fall.
She let go a couple dozen feet above the ground and dropped into a roll when her feet hit the hard-packed earth. Something jabbed her in the back, and she instantly remembered the rifle she had strapped there. “Puta merda . . .”
Doc hit the ground next to her with a thud, dirt and grass flying. The impact was so hard, Tina wondered if he had used the brake at all.
“I’m taking point,” he said. He was up and sprinting ahead before she had even regained her footing. The rest of his message came through the comm: “Cover me, and then sweep the building from the other side. Vinsa, give us some cover from above.”
Doc had his assault rifle ready and let off a couple shots toward the burning structure ahead of them. Tina still couldn’t make out who they were even fighting against. From above, the chainsaw howl of the minigun wailed as Vinsa followed Doc’s command, laying down covering fire that lit up the perimeter of their landing zone with fountains of packed dirt and debris.
Tina took off, following Doc’s lead. She felt a bit ridiculous crouching the way he did; at eight feet tall, she was too big to miss no matter what she did.

About Eugene Kirk:

I've been writing for about twenty years, mostly in the Sci-fi genre. Before then, I used to make up stories all the time for role playing games, along side my co-author, Garan Mad. But now, with a wife, two kids and a full time career as an engineer, I don't have time to game anymore, but my creative juices still flow, so now I pour them into my writing.

After publishing a couple of novels, I've switched to focus on shorter length works; something I like to call "Made for TV novels". They are fast, fun reads that you can digest in an hour or so, much like an episode of your favorite TV show. And with the time pressures we all have these days, maybe a couple of hours is all you can afford to spend on some quick entertainment. So hopefully you'll enjoy the format and if you keep reading it, I'll keep writing it.

About Garan Mad:

Though I trained as an artist, writing has always been a passion of mine, though this was kept mostly to Role Playing games, alongside long-time friend and co-author, Eugene Kirk.

A few years ago I fulfilled my dream of publishing a series of comics called CONTRACT and although comics/graphic novels have always been my first passion the time and monetary constraints of artwork production is quite daunting. So, after a bit of encouragement to return to writing I've jumped (back) into the pool.

So pick up a book, give it a shot and, most important, if you enjoy PLEASE let us know.

Once Giants (Once Giants, Book 2) by Eugene Kirk and Garan Mad

Release date: May 13, 2017
Subgenre: Military science fiction, Cyberpunk

About Once Giants:

The future is a no-holds-barred free for all, but all in a day’s work…when you were Once Giants. The year is 2189, and a wormhole leading to five habitable planets has been discovered, prompting a new global space race. Political undermining and sabotage abound, creating the perfect blend of chaos and opportunity for newly minted NETwork operator Tina Thompson to put her augmented, former pro-wrestler body to the test in the mercenary game.

But her celebrity past isn’t so easy to outrun. And when her infamy botches her latest job in Imperial East Africa, her actions trigger repercussions that affect former rival Shay Santiago as well.

As Tina and Shay both struggle to salvage their lives, a bigger threat looms. A mysterious gravitational anomaly has appeared, threatening to destroy the solar system itself. And Shay’s old high school flame may be the only person on Earth who can stop it.

Richly textured, interweaving narratives introduce new characters and bigger military sci-fi threats in this second installment of Once Giants, offering a thought-provoking look at how one person’s actions can affect the entire world.

Excerpt:

Shay extended her fangs, bit down, and tore at the savory meat. Swallowing fist-sized chunks, she sped through to get to the part the gathering crowd of construction workers really wanted to see. Her crew hooted and cheered when she showed off the smooth, stripped thigh bone. Neighboring crews stopped work and strolled over to watch the spectacle. Shay smiled and waited until everyone was ready before continuing.
It was always fun putting on a show for the boys. It reminded her of better times.
She licked her lips and placed the thick beef bone lengthwise in her mouth, positioned it against her augmented incisors like a pair of bolt cutters. Then she crunched down, her teeth slicing clean through with a loud snap. The heavy knuckle of the joint quickly met the same fate as Shay munched away, crushing and chewing. The shards of bone and marrow rolled around on her tongue, the flavor tickling her taste buds delightfully before she swallowed the last of it.
“Damn, girl. I still don’t know if I find that sexy or scary,” Hank said, shaking his head. A few of the other guys laughed in agreement.
“What can I say?” Shay flashed a She-Wolf smile, pulled on her thick work gloves, and fixed her hard hat. “I do love a nice, big bone.” She shot a wink their way, and the men hollered. More than a few called out that they had a bone for her anytime. Shay laughed right along with them as she picked up an I-beam and hefted it onto her shoulder. She grinned and launched a handful of insults and lewd comments of her own, inciting another chorus of rowdy cheers. Then, abruptly, a booming voice cut through the lunchtime din.
“Santiago! My office. Now!”

***

“You can’t be serious, Frank!” Shay crouched uncomfortably in the trailer that served as an improvised office for the site foreman, the tight confines pressing in on her large, seven-foot-two frame. In the corner, a battered standing fan clattered away; a vain attempt to stave off the oppressively humid Florida heat.
“The memo came down this morning.” A smug look was plastered over Frank Jensen’s sweaty face. “It’s out of my hands.”
Shay looked out the small window to see the crews slowly getting back to work, climbing into rust splattered, faded yellow machines, or up makeshift stairs with tools in hand. She should be out there with them. She clenched her jaw before looking back at Jensen. He’d always had something against her. This wasn’t the first time he had tried to lay her off for something stupid.
“What is it this time? Subcontractor bringing in auto-lifters? Company lost the bid for the next stage of the superstructure?” Shay huffed and forced herself to calm down. With her rent already overdue, a complication like this couldn’t have come at a more inopportune time. Guess she’d have to suck up to the fat bastard. “Come on, Mr. Jensen. I’m already taking unpaid leave to go to the convention next weekend. I need to be onsite to make up my time this month. Just shuffle me somewhere else. Put me on with Hank or Fry on the East block. Those guys have been complaining for weeks about being down a loader.”
“I already said it’s not my decision.” He made a show of shifting through the papers and blueprints on his desk. His frustrating habit of acting as if he didn’t know exactly what he was looking for caused Shay’s ire to rise. Finally, he picked up a folder, opened it, and nodded before sliding it toward her.

“Seems the head office has some issues with that wrestling club of yours.”  He leaned back in his tattered chair, failing to hide a grin with a couple of fingers over his lips.
Shay scanned over the contents. What the hell? The first page was a full-sized, glossy print of herself, dressed in one of her old costumes and growling at the camera. The logo of the American Amazon Wrestling League was emblazoned across the top, her own logo at the bottom in holographic text: The Savage She-Wolf. She couldn’t begin to recall how many of these same promotional glossies she’d signed in her days both in and out of the League. Hundreds? Thousands? Shay continued on, flipping through the packet of documents until she came to a freshly printed story from the International News Network: Former Amazonian Woman’s Wrestling League Villain Commits International Crime in Real Life.

The Neon Amazon (Once Giants, Book 1) by Eugene Kirk and Garan Mad

 Release date: May 8, 2017
Subgenre: Military science fiction, Cyberpunk

About The Neon Amazon:

Eight-foot-tall Tina Thompson has to make the biggest decision of her life.

Once a pretend villain in a league of bio-augmented professional wrestlers, Tina now survives in the slums of São Paulo as a drug lord's enforcer, using her genetically enhanced body to take out anyone her boss deems a “problem”.

All Tina wants is a normal life, but with millions in debt and a body that requires constant nano-treatments to stave off deadly side effects, she doesn't have a lot of options. When a collection run goes bad, things get worse. The cyber-enhanced mercenaries she’s just killed have a boss too, and he wants payback. He offers Tina a choice: die, or work for him in exchange for a permanent fix to her enhancements. No more nano-treatments, and no hope of going back to a normal life.

Now, Tina must decide if her freedom is worth the price. All she has to do is give up on her dream of normalcy, become a villain for real . . . and blow up a starship.

Gritty and exciting, The Neon Amazon is the first installment of a new sci-fi action series, featuring a twist on the idea of heroes and villains, set against a military sci-fi backdrop in a cyberpunk world.

When She-Hulk meets Dark Matter, expect some bodies to fly.

Excerpt:

Tina’s thoughts left her as she slammed full force into the side of a grav-van. Or maybe it had slammed into her. Either way, the cheap SEAUX-Korean import crumpled like a beer can as it bounced off her eight-foot frame and spun out in a shower of sparks and exploding glass.
“Caralho!” she cursed. Damn idiot!
She launched a barefooted kick into what was left of the van and sent it careening across the rain drenched highway on its busted repeller coils and into the curb. She resisted the urge to take out the rest of her pain and agitation on the crippled vehicle, more out of self-preservation than self-control. It was probably her fault for running across a highway in the middle of the night without looking, anyway.
Still, the least they could have done was hit the friggin’ brakes!
“Stupid schmucks,” she muttered as rain pelted her from the night sky, soaking her through. “That damn well hurt.”
Tina brushed chips of broken glass from her wet shoulders as she peered through the van’s busted windscreen. She couldn’t tell if the occupants were badly injured or not, and she didn’t really care. They were still moving, and it was clear they were a couple of civilians, not members of some rival jacker gang trying to take out Boss Marcos’s “elite prized champion.” Plus the cops would be on their way now, and she didn’t have time for that crap.
Tina fled the highway and jumped the guard rail, falling thirty feet to the darkened confines of the favela below. She impacted with a spray of wet earth and took off in a sprint through the dimly lit shanty town.

A midnight collection run. Solo. How’d she end up working for a bastard who’d make her pull a job like this? Her last conversation with him was over an hour ago, but Marcos’s parting words still had her seething with rage.
“Don’t forget. I own your ass, you big dumb bitch.”
The mere echo of those words had her punching the backs of plastiply shacks as she barreled through the muddy alleyways. She’d fix him one day. When she could finally get free from him, and out of this hellhole called Brazil.
The rain hissed in a steady snare-drum roll as it pounded the corrugated zinc roofs of the three- and four-story tenement buildings lining either side of the alley. She reached a stairway and bounded up the crudely cast concrete steps three at a time, a sudden pain shooting through her body with each lunge.
What the hell?
She forced her mind to push past it and kept going, her lungs struggling to placate her aching cells with as much oxygen and synthetic endorphins as her body could muster. That van hadn’t hit her that hard.
Had it?
She reached a platform and stopped, her breathing ragged, a coppery taste in her mouth. She sucked in air and hacked loudly into her hand, leaning against one of the tenement buildings for support as a coughing fit took hold. When it finally subsided, flecks of rust-colored mucus covered her palm.
“Shit . . .” Dying again, already—not even three days this time. “Cheap-ass nanites.”
