The Medici Chronicles follows Mika through nearly twenty years of her life as she disguises herself as a boy to survive, learns to become a Medici and struggles to find where she belongs

Excerpt:

Mika walked out of the gates, even here the countryside had changed in the last three years. The copses dotting the fields had grown, new saplings taking over adjacent fields. The settlements close to the river had expanded in places and houses had been allowed to fall down in others.

It didn’t matter, she was only here for one thing. Tucking her backpack into a bush, she looked down at Stafa and took a deep breath. The night was young, the smaller of the two moons was up and the other would be appearing shortly. Stafa shivered, a soft encouraging purr bursting from him. Relax, let it out. She stood with her shoulders dropped and allowed the cat to take over. It slid around her mind, sinking into her body. Her partial change made her look grotesque, neither cat nor human, a nightmare. It was the worst of both worlds and it was all she had left.

Once a week or so she’d come out here and let the cat out, even when she was exhausted. It was the only way to deal with it otherwise it took over while she slept and she couldn’t cope with the lack of control. Waking up to find herself in bed with Nim several years ago had been the last straw, she knew it couldn’t do any damage out here.

The cat whispered its joy of the night to her. Never mind the fact that it only had two legs instead of four and that her senses were pitiful in comparison to what they had been when she could change fully. It stretched her body and bent to bump noses with Stafa. Leave the human world to its intrigue and politics, the cat didn’t care for such things. Even the relentless mending of people would be supplanted by the monochrome and the vivid splash of heart’s blood.

Her slender shadow stretched out in front of her, the night was quiet apart from the soft rustle of leaves and the abomination she was, scanned the landscape. All senses on high alert, lifting her head to scent the breeze, she spotted something moving. Stafa saw her freeze and crept sideways, ears rotating, his single eye flicking. Mika allowed herself to sink into a sleep while the cat took over, she had no wish to see what they’d do to the rabbit. For some reason when she’d actually changed her shape, it hadn’t bothered her as much. The thought of her own body toying with a smaller creature for the sheer joy made her feel ill.

She woke much later with the cat sated on the night and her face stiff with blood. Mika pulled herself up to wash in a nearby stream. Both moons were nearly full, their reflected light bringing the countryside into a sharp black and white focus.

The cold water brought her back to reality. War, she’d not been able to get the concept out of her mind all day and she knew her distraction had been noticed. Who could she be loyal to? The country she’d been brought up in didn’t want her and yet the thought of soldiers pouring out of the mountains… Rufus was an able commander, his quicksilver mind capable of changing direction to complement the way the battle moved, she had no doubt he would get further than Keira’s father.

Ackbarr had been her home for nearly twenty years, she loved the people and walking the cobbled streets in the forbidding city and the Medici had accepted her as one of their own. The Medici – they would debate supporting the invasion shortly. She dropped her head and decided she would go with their decision.

Blood Debt (The Medici Chronicles, Book 4) by Erme Lander

Release date: April 20, 2021
Subgenre: YA fantasy

About Blood Debt:

“It’s not a nervous tick Gavin. If this gets out I could kill someone.”

Addicted to the drugs she is taking to suppress her changing abilities, Mika is readying herself to take over the position of Court Medici when she hears her sons have arrived at the border between the two countries and are asking for her. They are strangers, she’s not met them since she gave them up as babies thirteen years ago and they have their own problems. Her only hope - and theirs - lies in the changer community in the mountains.

Mika - nothing more than a fifteen year old girl who has lost her twin brother. The circumstances leading to her arranged marriage and the unwanted discovery that she can change her skin.

The Medici Chronicles follows Mika through nearly twenty years of her life as she disguises herself as a boy to survive, learns to become a Medici and struggles to find where she belongs.

The events in Blood Debt happen about three years after those in Medici of Ackbarr.

Excerpt:

Several weeks passed while the Dukes held control, manoeuvrings, shifting alliances, their eyes wary on their own backs in case another slid a verbal dagger between their ribs to kill a reputation. The funeral happened, the sombre pomp and ceremony for a king who had been respected for the iron grip he held over lords and land but not loved.

The expected announcement that the young queen was abdicating and leaving the throne open to Keira. Mika didn’t think she had much hope when she’d declared that she looked forward to a quiet retirement outside of court life. Even with throwing herself onto her stepdaughter’s mercies, she’d be lucky to get a cloister this side of the mountains. The desperation could almost be heard as she said that her unborn child would be brought up in the knowledge that they couldn’t claim the throne. Nice try she thought, it would only take one fanatic to kill both for any perceived approval. It was bad enough with Keira having four other sisters from different mothers. They would be married off, but not to anyone too ambitious. Such a balancing act, she was sure Lord Eldon would be busy scheming to suggest who would be best.

The common people of Ackbarr went around their daily business, a tension in the air mirroring the tension in the keep high above them. Keira’s ascension to the throne was probable but not without risk. Even the crowning ceremony itself had the chance of its own fatal failure and had been known to descend into a blood bath before, with the eventual victor emerging to the general populace. Those working in the streets argued cases for nobles and speculated chances. Mika had sly questions asked when she walked the streets, the Medici were known as a power in their own right and many wanted to know what they thought. She made her answers as bland as she could, knowing that something would be read into whatever she said.

Mika rubbed her face, wishing for the day to be over. She checked that her bedroom door was locked and for once, stripped naked in front of the mirror. Still slim, her spare body was flat bellied. Never eating enough, there was nothing to her. The voice floated up through the years, who’d said that - Rylan? A brief image of shaded morning light through windows and a table spread with breakfast. Rylan himself was a dark shadow, his face erased with the passage of years. The corset she wore to flatten and hide her breasts hadn’t been kind to them, they lay against her ribs. Not for the first time, she wished for a more feminine body with some curves like Lissina’s. Mika reminded herself that she pulled off her deception purely because of her shape and height. Lissi’s body fitted in with her size, a daintiness with a tiny waist hands could span.

Mika sighed, this was the reason she avoided standing in front of the mirror naked - it reminded her of what she wasn’t. She dressed, becoming the dapper Medici she was known for being outside of this room. She combed her hair, noticing the dark blonde roots. She’d need to bleach it again, something that her servants did know about. They respected her wishes on this and kept it private. They knew of her needs for privacy although not the reasons and she made life easy for them. No access to her rooms unless she was there, allowed her to wash her women’s things without the risk of discovery. A slender man now stared back at her in the mirror.

Medici of Ackbarr (The Medici Chronicles, Book 3) by Erme Lander

Release date: October 4, 2020
Subgenre: YA fantasy

About Medici of Ackbarr:

“The men go mad eventually – unable to separate themselves from the cats they control. The women? They fare little better...”

The words from Lin’s journal haunt Mika as she gains her Medici qualifications. Left homeless by his death, she tries to escape her grief by burying herself in her work, only to discover both old and new enemies waiting in the wings.

The events in this book take place about five years after those in “Blood Lore.”
Book Two of The Medici Chronicles

Excerpt:

As the evening darkened, Mika fell into a half sleep on the bed, tired from the long day. Tamar hadn’t come back yet and the cottage was quiet. The wind rustled through the leaves outside the window, soft sounds calling her soul to come out and play. Silky kitten steps tracked through her mind, a presence stealthily moving closer. The sway and twitch of a tail, hypnotic, tense, every hair alive with anticipation. She smiled with the memories of hunting, alive in the night.

She shifted in her stupor, her mouth opening to call, to warn of a danger that no one else would see. Her body twisted in the bedclothes, knotting her shirt around her waist. Frustration built at the constraints and a growl burst from her as the cat pounced and took over.

The cat crouched on the floor, back claws unsheathed and tore the shirt from her changed body. It shook the remains of fabric from her and looked around the dim room. Mika’s mind shrieked in dismay. Nothing to hold, the cat flicked her away, dismissing her superiority. It was in control. It stalked the room, sniffed the table, brushed past the bed, marking its territory by swiping a cheek against it. It was too small in here, too confined.

A clawed paw scraped at the door. Mika had a moment of relief, thinking it wouldn’t be able to get out. She looked with it as it snuffled the air through the cracks. Then it raised itself and knocked at the latch. She went cold within the confines of her prison. The latch rattled. Another blow and it came loose. The door swung open with a claw hooking it towards her.

She could see the corridor through the cat’s eyes. An unholy mix of cat and intellect. It was no longer a pure being thinking only of the next moment. It had learned, watching through her, in the same way that she had. How could she have not realised this? She was as separate from it as she had been so many years ago. She had no way to persuade it, a predator stalking the rooms of the hospice. The shutters rattled in the corridor and the cat started, growling. Mika hoped that everyone else was out, that Tamar hadn’t come back…

Blood Lore (The Medici Chronicles, Book 2) by Erme Lander

Release date: April 15, 2018
Subgenre: YA Fantasy

About Blood Lore:

You are always welcome to come home… aren’t you?
“The saw rasped against bone and Mika clenched her jaw as her own teeth remembered the red stained ivory sliding beneath them. A crack of powerful muscles and the marrow laid bare. Ears back, eyes hooded - watching. She knows the man will die on the table.”

After five years of hard study, Mika has achieved the rank of Journeyman Medici. Few know that she is a girl pretending to be a boy in the male dominated world of Ackbarr. Far fewer know of the animal concealed beneath her skin.

Searching for any knowledge of her kind, she is determined to travel back to Cassai. The forests of her childhood are seductive, calling to the memories buried deep within but she discovers that her world has moved on without her. Or maybe it never was as she remembers.

The events in this book take place about five years after those in “The Lion of Ackbarr.”
Book One of The Medici Chronicles.

Excerpt:

Sweat dampened her hair and she flicked it out of her eyes with a swing. Droplets sparkled in the light as they fell. He was going to die. Another glance at Belindros told her that he knew it too. Face set, he worked on regardless. Sellon was panicking. He had to be asked to pass the instruments, scrabbled for the unexpected.

The atmosphere chilled. Jamari checked the man’s pulse and shook his head. The man’s whimpers were becoming less, his eyes closing. She knew that look. The look she’d seen so many times on prey as her jaws had closed on them. He was giving up, too much pain, not enough blood left inside. A final sigh, the shiver running over his skin. She stood up, letting go.

Jamari checked his pulse, pulled back a half closed eyelid to check then looked over to Belindros. Wordless he stepped back, shoulders slumped. Sellon looked bewildered at the change of pace, not realising what the others knew already.

Belindros’ voice was quiet as he said, “Clear up and throw a bucket of water over Damaris so he can help. Then you can have the rest of the afternoon off.”

The attendants dealt with the dead body much to Mika’s relief. She couldn't have coped with the cooling lump of flesh and the smells that said that it was already decaying. Damaris woke spluttering and groggily helped wipe the table down as they collected the instruments to be scrubbed.

The daylight when she went outside was too bright. She stood, staring at the wall in front of her. The other two had muttered something about going to the tavern, she’d left them without a word. A man had died in front of her and she had the rest of the day off. Time to think about the shivers that ran down his skin, the whimpers and sigh as he gave up. She didn’t want to think. Tears gathered and she brushed them away with a shaking hand. She rushed blindly down to the bottom gates, through the markets with people going about their daily business.

The guards at the gate waved and shouted greetings at her that she couldn’t answer. Past the docks where the man had worked, the silhouettes of the warehouses sharp against the sun. Shouts from the workers assaulted her ears, the smells of human habitation too strong for her sensitive nose.

She ran into the farmland surrounding the city and at the first decent cover she could find she stripped and crouched naked, panting her distress. Tears forced themselves from between her eyelids. She didn’t want to think. A moan escaped her and she allowed her other side to escape. She stretched, yawned and became something other than Mikon the journeyman.
