Chameleon's Challenge (Chameleon Assassin, Book 3) by B.R. Kingsolver

 Release date: June 13, 2017
Subgenre: Post-apocalyptic, dystopian

About Chameleon's Challenge:

Libby's chameleon mutation has led to a lucrative career as a thief and assassin. She normally doesn't worry about the comfort of corporate executives, but when she stumbles onto the grisly murder of a rich man's mistress, it gets her attention.

The murder leads Libby to believe her best friend's life is in danger, and she vows to protect her. The killings continue, some in broad daylight, but no one ever sees the killer.

For a chameleon assassin, the scenario feels uncomfortably familiar.

Excerpt:

“Dad, if you had to catch me, how would you go about it?”
“I’d probably bait a trap with chocolate.”
I threw my napkin at him. I wanted to throw my fork. “Can you be serious?”
He chuckled and sat back, a faraway look on his face. Pretty soon, he said, “I’d bait a trap with Nellie, but that’s not what you’re asking, is it? You mean, how would I trap a chameleon? Bright light and open space. A water canon would show his location because he’s still solid in chameleon mode. A pit trap, because he still weighs the same. You get the idea.”
“Remember when my abilities first began to manifest?” He had hooked me up to metabolic monitors and brain scans, and tried to figure out how I turned invisible, and then later how I managed to morph into an illusion of another being. “The tests you ran to try and figure out how I do what I do?”
He nodded. “Your ability with electricity, both yours and your mother’s, is a physical phenomenon. There are scientific papers dealing with the different manifestations of electrogenesis. But we never did figure out your chameleon abilities. It has to be psychic. Even if we had a brain scan, though, I don’t know if we could interpret it.”
“Yeah, well, but you never explained why cameras can’t see me either. When Mike and I were in Chicago, he had a theory. He wondered if it was a combination of the two mutations, the electrogenesis and the chameleon ability. I looked it up, and there’s a difference between electrogenesis and electrokinesis. But suppose I do both?”
Dad looked thoughtful. “You know, we always tried to monitor you, your physiological processes, to see if anything changed when you cast your illusion, or whatever it is you do. I never tried to see if anything changed in the environment.”
We went downstairs to his laboratory, where he set up several pieces of equipment. I watched him for about half an hour, then he turned to me.
“Okay, do that blend into the background thing.”
I blurred my image and heard a soft burp from his computer, then a soft hum.
“What’s that?” I asked.
“Do it again,” he ordered.
I let myself become visible and the hum stopped. Then I blurred my image again, heard the little burp, and the hum.
“What are you seeing?” I asked as I walked behind him to look at the computer screen. He had a dozen windows with different graphs displayed. Some of them didn’t show any activity, most showed static, but a couple of them showed they were recording something.
“Well, I know more than I did before, but I still don’t understand it,” he said.
“Will you answer my question? What is that?” I pointed at the screen, then realized my image was still blurred and he couldn’t see me. I unblurred, and he jumped. “What? You heard my voice, you knew I was here.”

Once Giants (Once Giants, Book 2) by Eugene Kirk and Garan Mad

Release date: May 13, 2017
Subgenre: Military science fiction, Cyberpunk

About Once Giants:

The future is a no-holds-barred free for all, but all in a day’s work…when you were Once Giants. The year is 2189, and a wormhole leading to five habitable planets has been discovered, prompting a new global space race. Political undermining and sabotage abound, creating the perfect blend of chaos and opportunity for newly minted NETwork operator Tina Thompson to put her augmented, former pro-wrestler body to the test in the mercenary game.

But her celebrity past isn’t so easy to outrun. And when her infamy botches her latest job in Imperial East Africa, her actions trigger repercussions that affect former rival Shay Santiago as well.

As Tina and Shay both struggle to salvage their lives, a bigger threat looms. A mysterious gravitational anomaly has appeared, threatening to destroy the solar system itself. And Shay’s old high school flame may be the only person on Earth who can stop it.

Richly textured, interweaving narratives introduce new characters and bigger military sci-fi threats in this second installment of Once Giants, offering a thought-provoking look at how one person’s actions can affect the entire world.

Excerpt:

Shay extended her fangs, bit down, and tore at the savory meat. Swallowing fist-sized chunks, she sped through to get to the part the gathering crowd of construction workers really wanted to see. Her crew hooted and cheered when she showed off the smooth, stripped thigh bone. Neighboring crews stopped work and strolled over to watch the spectacle. Shay smiled and waited until everyone was ready before continuing.
It was always fun putting on a show for the boys. It reminded her of better times.
She licked her lips and placed the thick beef bone lengthwise in her mouth, positioned it against her augmented incisors like a pair of bolt cutters. Then she crunched down, her teeth slicing clean through with a loud snap. The heavy knuckle of the joint quickly met the same fate as Shay munched away, crushing and chewing. The shards of bone and marrow rolled around on her tongue, the flavor tickling her taste buds delightfully before she swallowed the last of it.
“Damn, girl. I still don’t know if I find that sexy or scary,” Hank said, shaking his head. A few of the other guys laughed in agreement.
“What can I say?” Shay flashed a She-Wolf smile, pulled on her thick work gloves, and fixed her hard hat. “I do love a nice, big bone.” She shot a wink their way, and the men hollered. More than a few called out that they had a bone for her anytime. Shay laughed right along with them as she picked up an I-beam and hefted it onto her shoulder. She grinned and launched a handful of insults and lewd comments of her own, inciting another chorus of rowdy cheers. Then, abruptly, a booming voice cut through the lunchtime din.
“Santiago! My office. Now!”

***

“You can’t be serious, Frank!” Shay crouched uncomfortably in the trailer that served as an improvised office for the site foreman, the tight confines pressing in on her large, seven-foot-two frame. In the corner, a battered standing fan clattered away; a vain attempt to stave off the oppressively humid Florida heat.
“The memo came down this morning.” A smug look was plastered over Frank Jensen’s sweaty face. “It’s out of my hands.”
Shay looked out the small window to see the crews slowly getting back to work, climbing into rust splattered, faded yellow machines, or up makeshift stairs with tools in hand. She should be out there with them. She clenched her jaw before looking back at Jensen. He’d always had something against her. This wasn’t the first time he had tried to lay her off for something stupid.
“What is it this time? Subcontractor bringing in auto-lifters? Company lost the bid for the next stage of the superstructure?” Shay huffed and forced herself to calm down. With her rent already overdue, a complication like this couldn’t have come at a more inopportune time. Guess she’d have to suck up to the fat bastard. “Come on, Mr. Jensen. I’m already taking unpaid leave to go to the convention next weekend. I need to be onsite to make up my time this month. Just shuffle me somewhere else. Put me on with Hank or Fry on the East block. Those guys have been complaining for weeks about being down a loader.”
“I already said it’s not my decision.” He made a show of shifting through the papers and blueprints on his desk. His frustrating habit of acting as if he didn’t know exactly what he was looking for caused Shay’s ire to rise. Finally, he picked up a folder, opened it, and nodded before sliding it toward her.

“Seems the head office has some issues with that wrestling club of yours.”  He leaned back in his tattered chair, failing to hide a grin with a couple of fingers over his lips.
Shay scanned over the contents. What the hell? The first page was a full-sized, glossy print of herself, dressed in one of her old costumes and growling at the camera. The logo of the American Amazon Wrestling League was emblazoned across the top, her own logo at the bottom in holographic text: The Savage She-Wolf. She couldn’t begin to recall how many of these same promotional glossies she’d signed in her days both in and out of the League. Hundreds? Thousands? Shay continued on, flipping through the packet of documents until she came to a freshly printed story from the International News Network: Former Amazonian Woman’s Wrestling League Villain Commits International Crime in Real Life.

About Eugene Kirk:

I've been writing for about twenty years, mostly in the Sci-fi genre. Before then, I used to make up stories all the time for role playing games, along side my co-author, Garan Mad. But now, with a wife, two kids and a full time career as an engineer, I don't have time to game anymore, but my creative juices still flow, so now I pour them into my writing.

After publishing a couple of novels, I've switched to focus on shorter length works; something I like to call "Made for TV novels". They are fast, fun reads that you can digest in an hour or so, much like an episode of your favorite TV show. And with the time pressures we all have these days, maybe a couple of hours is all you can afford to spend on some quick entertainment. So hopefully you'll enjoy the format and if you keep reading it, I'll keep writing it.

About Garan Mad:

Though I trained as an artist, writing has always been a passion of mine, though this was kept mostly to Role Playing games, alongside long-time friend and co-author, Eugene Kirk.

A few years ago I fulfilled my dream of publishing a series of comics called CONTRACT and although comics/graphic novels have always been my first passion the time and monetary constraints of artwork production is quite daunting. So, after a bit of encouragement to return to writing I've jumped (back) into the pool.

So pick up a book, give it a shot and, most important, if you enjoy PLEASE let us know.

Root of the Spark (Wild Seed #1) by Michele Fogal

On offer until June 15
Sub-genre: Science Fiction, Romance, LGBT

About Root of the Spark:

Dell has an unexpected spark that masculine and feminine energies create when swirled and fused inside a single person. But will this be enough to stop the age-old tide of fear and violence as it rises again?

Born in the midst of the oldest human war, the war of the sexes, Dell is the first true hermaphrodite on the planet of Ameliaura. Dell has used the anonymity of the Fatherlander cities to survive, and the tight community of the Motherlander villages to manage, but reaching maturity means that neither of those are enough to thrive on anymore. After a vicious attack, and an unexpected love interest, Dell must step into the light to fight for a real home.

Warning: this book contains a child who is actually an ancient dragon made of fungus, a lovely villain imprisoned inside the creature’s body, a hasty clan gathering in the collective subconscious, a hermaphrodite orphanage on the brink, and some very naughty acts on a staircase.

Excerpt:

I was huffing and slugging the walls until I fell to my knees, and then I figured it was just as good to beat the hell out of the floor since it was all clearly the same shit. Its body. The whole thing was its lord-forgotten body. With me just like a tiny maggot inside a fart bubble in its gut. I started to shake.

It could probably turn this whole room into that harder stuff if it wanted. It could probably collapse the walls and crush me just like the bug I was. I put something extra into the next wallop I laid onto the floor when I thought of that.

“Come on, you son of a whore! Just get it over with. Come and crush me up like a worm. I’d rather die now than sit here waiting for whatever your sick, fat brain is thinking up for me.”

I flopped out flat and rolled to look at the ceiling. There it was, glowing away like its own little sun was in behind a thin blanket of that stuff. What could I possibly do that would make the hugest beast sit up and pay me any kind of notice? Even if I’d had a knife or a sword, what good would that have done? A shock stick would have barely tickled that thing’s tonsils.

It was time to man up to the fact that not only was I in the plink with no real date for getting out, not only was there no way out, but I was nothing. I had nothing to fight with, no strength worth a wit in here. I cried then, like a baby. Or rather, like a toddler. Any man that’s had kids of his own knows that no baby ever did crying the justice that a two-year-old can.

I gave in and let it roll outta me, snot and sobs and all. The red-hot shame of it was something terrible. I was nothing, and this thing that held me, it was seeing all of this and would now know not just how weak I was—which, when you think about it, Acorn must have known before I was even in here—but that I knew how weak I was and couldn’t keep myself from admitting it.

How long had it taken to break me? A few hours? It was pathetic how weak I was, the toughest of the hard-working guys. I was terrified in a way I hadn’t felt in a long time. No booze, no people. I had to have one or the other. To be alone with myself was just not…safe.

Relativity in Action

Einstein’s greatest contribution, and one might think his most obvious, is the idea of RELATIVITY.
This is the concept that means that the Observer’s perspective, that is to say, his or her position in the fabric of Space/Time, is “relative” to everything else.
This determines the factors that go towards influencing the interactions between the Observer and the Universe.
To that end, I would like to discuss the idea of this unique Perspective, and Relativity as a variable of worldview.
So, your way of looking at the world is “relative”.
And, your perspective of what is occurring around you is also “relative”.
Your experience is not the same as anyone else, so it’s important to remember that their worldview is colored differently than yours.
Einstein put it very simply, actually.
He explained it in terms of math and physics, and even told everyone that “God does not play dice with the Universe!”
He was correct.
But, God apparently loves poker.
And, it is my opinion that, one day, and very soon, we may find out that our inability to travel Faster Than Light is part of a very good bluff.
With that in mind, let the lessons begin!

The Scientific Method

You know, Science is one of the most interesting things that Humanity has conceived, and yet one of the most misunderstood.

The Scientific Method is taught in schools, but apparently not well.

Few people understand that process, which is supposed to go like this:
·         Question: The Observer sees something that makes him/her question just why what happened just happened, in just that particular way.
·         Hypothesis: The Observer comes up with some ideas about WHY this particular observation is as it is.
·         Prediction: The Observer then makes a prediction, regarding the veracity of the Hypothesis.
·         Experiment: The Observer then designs, builds and conducts an Experiment to gather data on the phenomenon, and records the outcomes.
·         Analysis: The Observer sits down and tries to mathematically prove why the observed data does or does not fit the hypothesis. Note that there is not a pre-defined outcome here, nor is one desired. The Scientific Method is purportedly objective and dispassionate. Data is merely data, not correlation nor proof.
·         Replication: Other Observers will interact with the original Observer, and if they are sufficiently trained and interested, conduct the identical experiment to gather more data. This is done to allow a more thorough understanding of why the data fits the hypothesis.
·         External review: The Observer submits his ideas and data to a review of his Peers, usually other Observers with similar training and proven ability to diagnose and understand the concepts related in the Paper.
·         Data recording and sharing: The Observer and the others will then record and publish the results formally.

IF enough evidence is collected, tests run, results analyzed and replicated, and then peer-reviewed, then there is the possibility that a scientific theory can be produced.

This is a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world that is acquired through the scientific method and repeatedly tested and confirmed, preferably using a defined protocol from which observations can be made and experiments performed.

It is important to note that these theories are understood to conform to a set of rigorous standards in order to be considered the MOST comprehensive form of scientific knowledge.

A ‘theory’ is not just an ‘idea’ – it is an idea whose veracity is unassailable from the perspective of having been thoroughly tested, confirmed, and most importantly, agreed upon because the results are repeatable under identical conditions of testing.

The reason I am illustrating what is a universally accepted concept is because there are many things that are presented as ‘science’ that are usually thinly-veiled attempts to push an agenda of one sort or another.

Vaccination, sexual preference or gender identity and intelligence testing fall into this category.

While there are many persuasive arguments made about these and other subjects, the tendency to either demonize or dehumanize the proponents on one side by the opponents of the other is strong.

This is NOT science.

This is politics.
