ABOUT The Brigadoon Boondoggle:
"I have to help them. All of them. It's why I do this."
Michiko, the hero known as the Monkey Queen, and geek girl Beth McGill thought it would be easy. They've become good friends since they started working together to save the world, why not become roommates? Of course, that was before the kitchen fire. And the broken bedroom door. Not to mention the cranky guinea pig.
But they have bigger problems ahead. A shady real estate deal has left two new groups of Emigres arguing over a meadow. Other Emigres are vanishing without a trace. And enemies old and new lurk in the woods, in the shadows, even in dreams.
Can Michiko and Beth stop the darkness...or will they be the next victims?
Excerpt:
The shadows seemed to take form as a woman walked out from them. She wore a flowing black robe, her hair was long and black, and her eyes held a cruel joy. "Beth McGill," Muirin said. "We meet again." She smiled.
"How—" Beth started to say.
"How did I get into your dream?" Muirin strolled casually towards Beth. "I walk through shadows, and your dreams are filled with them. It's very exhausting, but revenge will be worth it."
Beth saw a shadow out of the corner of her eye. It crept towards her like a flowing stream. "If you die in your dreams, do you die in the real world? I do hope so." Muirin gestured, and the shadow brushed Beth's foot.
"Michiko!" Beth screamed as shadows twined around her legs. "Help!"
"Really, girl!" Muirin said, shaking her head sadly. "Do you think that has any chance of working?"
The shadows were now up to Beth's waist. She felt them tightening as they slid up her body. "Michiko! Help!" she shouted over and over, even as the shadows started to squeeze the breath from her lungs.
"The Monkey Queen's not here. But she'll be next—"
The ground trembled beneath them, hard enough to shake the shadows off Beth. A crack opened, and Muirin tumbled into it, cursing as she fell. Beth felt herself being lifted off the ground—
Fantasy novelist, all-around wisecracker and penguin aficionado, Robert Dahlen lives in California with lots of penguins (no surprise), a tablet stuffed with e-books and works in progress, and a nice hat. He is hopefully working on more Monkey Queen stories as you read this. And FYI, his last name is pronounced "duh-LANE", as in "The rain in Spain falls mainly on Dahlen," which is why there's a run on umbrellas when he visits Barcelona.
