Guest blog: Seventeen Predictions for 2019 by A.E. Williams

To start the New Year with a bang, here is one of our occasional essays from the redoubtable A.E.Williams, wit, Rocket Surgeon and contrarian. All views are, of course, the writer's own, but we hope you'll find them amusing and thought-provoking) or possibly terrifying)!

SIXTEEN SEVENTEEN Predictions for 2019

Speculative fiction is at its best when the scenarios that are envisioned actually come to pass, within the lifespan of an average human being.[1]
With the realization that The Wave is currently enveloping Earth[2], that a huge cloud of interstellar dust is the actual reason for climate change[3], and the launch of the Falcon Heavy a reality[4], it is becoming speculated by some that I am a time-traveler, prescient[5], an alien[6] or at least really, really good at guessing what will happen in the near future.
In keeping with that tradition, I will continue to add to my impressive record by setting forth ten   sixteen seventeen predictions for 2019. Whether or not all will come to pass is of course, unknown at this point in 2019. By the time this sees print, some may already have occurred.
So, let’s see how the future is shaping up, shall we?

TECHNOLOGY
PREDICTION ONE:
Intel will perfect a super-dense, 3D substrate for transistor manufacturing. This will pave the path for true AI. Unfortunately, another suspicious factory fire will reduce the world’s supply of RAM, thereby making the neo Neopet, (think a virtual Pokémon, but one that is alive, sort of), a fad just in time for Christmas. The ensuing chaos will make Venezuela’s troubles seem insignificant by comparison.

POLITICS
PREDICTION TWO:
Trump’s Wall will be funded so hard, it will be able to be made of solid gold.[7]
PREDICTION THREE:
President Donald J. Trump will successfully mount a re-election campaign that guarantees his second term. Near the end of that term, the 25th Amendment will be repealed. The next thing that will happen is that Trump will follow in the footsteps of Mad Vlad Putin and Xi of China.
PREDICTION FOUR:
Hillary Clinton’s emails will finally be revealed to be 30,000 recipes for borscht and perogies[8]. Embarrassed FBI agents will be forced to admit that this was known all along, but thought to be steganographically-encrypted nuclear launch codes.
PREDICTION FIVE:
The rest of the JFK files that the CIA has promised to release will mysteriously vanish. Rumor will have it that the Russians hacked their servers.

DEATHS
PREDICTION SIX:
Everyone who dies in 2019 will do so by finally embracing Camus’ view of absurdism, and a rash of really stupid ways to expire will hit the news. Examples include being sat on by elephants, eaten by pet geckos, and walking under falling planes.[9]
PREDICTION SEVEN:
A lot of people will fall from cruise ships after a design flaw is discovered, in that these ships all require dihydrogen monoxide to float.
Al Gore will become suitably incensed, and a new film will be released in November, initially titled “An Inconvenient Truth: Return to Terabithia.” Audience test-screenings will cause it to be renamed “Overboard.” A new tax credit scheme, the “H2O Offset Credit” will be collected to stem the tide of awkward demises.[10]
PREDICTION EIGHT:
A new pandemic of flu will become the Spanish flu all over again. Fortunately, it will be confined to the poor, so no one will notice.[11]

FIGURE ONE: SOURCE

SPACE
PREDICTION NINE:
Many people will die of boredom, when lithium is depleted by Elon Musk for use in the BFER, an ion-propulsion starship, which is the logical successor to his Mars initiative. Musk will hollow-out Phobos, and adapt it into a generation ship.[12]

PREDICTION TEN:
After travelling for FORTY-TWO years through our solar system, Voyager One will come into contact with a paranoid, depressed alien space probe. Hilarity will ensue…

HUMAN INTEREST
PREDICTION ELEVEN:
Humans will remain interested in small, glowing silica-glass and carbon-fiber devices, being charged exorbitant fees for the privilege of being entertained as they travel through absurdist fantasies, pitifully attempting to stave off their inevitable doom.
PREDICTION TWELVE:
Star-struck entertainment enthusiasts will go supernova when Neil DeGrasse Tyson and Bill Nye announce they are getting married in zero-gee, primarily for tax purposes. Astronomers and television executive pairings will then become a ‘thing.’[13]

SCIENCE and CLIMATE
PREDICTION THIRTEEN:
A huge asteroid will hit Krakatoa. The resulting explosion will undo the Fujiyama disaster radiation problem, by creating massive tsunamis that force the radioactive particles to the sea floor.[14]
PREDICTION FOURTEEN:
Microsoft and Wells Fargo will embark on a plan to take over the cryptocurrency markets, using submerged server farms for bitcoin mining. This will be discovered to have been going on for the last several years, and Microsoft and Wells Fargo will be blamed as the real reason for climate change.
PREDICTION FIFTEEN:
Windows 12 will come out, and all the people on Earth will be retroactively billed for the amount of $349.99 to pay for it.[15]
PREDICTION SIXTEEN:
The Moon will be named as the fourth planet. Titan, Europa, Ceres and a dozen other celestial bodies will be inducted as planets as well. Pluto will still not be considered, primarily because of interorganizational snits between the Society.
Elementary school teachers will go mad trying to keep track, and mnemonic phrases will become mnemonic paragraphs. The most entertaining and memorable one will be:
So, maybe vertical ears might compose excellent methods due in June ecliptic solstice to unusual nocturnal umbrella eaters[16].
PREDICTION SEVENTEEN:
Effects from The Wave become evident![17]

[1] It probably easily falls within the lifespan of a typical alien, of course.
[5] Check out www.terminalreset.com for the stunning accuracy of many of my predictions!
[6] My personal favorite!
[7] It is to be noted that the funding will come from the rest of the world, and the Wall will keep Americans IN.
[8] The main ingredient in all of them is vodka.
[9][9] An unfortunate pilot will be crushed in a freak accident where the landing gear collapses during a pre-flight inspection. Details on which airline is involved are hazy.
[10] Mr. Gore will fall under much criticism for the discovery of his company which retrofits supertankers, converting them to high-end luxury liners. He also will begin wearing an eye-patch, misattributed to his affection for Nick Fury.
[11] This was slated to occur this year, the one-hundred-year anniversary of the Spanish Flu pandemic. In fact, this did occur! However, it was not reported in the Mainstream Media on the off chance that it would be labeled as ‘fake news.’ Look it up!
[12] Deimos is already an alien battlestar base, as documented in my short-story “Return of the Wanderers.”
[13] Parenthetically, both persons identify as males, with the newly recognized genders of ‘nerd’ and ‘geek’.
[14] There is a possibility that kaiju will come from the Marianas Trench, but the outlook is fuzzy on this.
[15] BONUS PREDICTION: The amount of money that Bill Gates receives as a result will form a black hole as it collapses under its own weight. Bits and bytes DO have mass! The world economies follow suit shortly thereafter. President Trump will brag that his wallet has the “biggest black hole.” Few would disagree…
[16] Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Moon, Ceres, Eros, Mars, Deimos*, Io, Jupiter, Europa, Saturn, Titan, Uranus, Neptune, Ultima Thule
[17] It’s already here! Read all about it in TERMINAL RESET! Do you feel younger yet?

The Standarounds of Twilight Gardens (Hallowind Cove, Book 5) by Cora Buhlert

Release date: December 17, 2018
Subgenre: Cozy Fantasy

About The Standarounds of Twilight Gardens:

Sinister shadows menace a family…

Strange things keep happening in the quirky little seaside town of Hallowind Cove, earning it the nickname "Harbour of the Weird".

When the Hutchinson family buy the beautiful Beauregard mansion on Gloomland Street, they believe they've made the deal of a lifetime.

But unfortunately, no one told them about the fog that envelops Hallowind Cove for three hundred and forty days a year. Or about the mysterious shadows that stand around Twilight Gardens, staring at random houses…

This is a short story of 3300 words or approximately 14 pages in the Hallowind Cove series, but may be read as a standalone.

Excerpt:

It was a Saturday night, the Hutchinsons’ first Saturday night in Hallowind Cove. Emma was sleeping peacefully in her cot, so Dave and Jennifer settled down on the sofa in the living room to watch a horror movie.
On the screen, the masked killer was just about to slash the throat of his first victim, the blonde and bitchy cheerleader who’d slept with the entire highschool football team and who was also stupid enough to venture into the attic at night all alone, when Dave and Jennifer suddenly got a hankering for popcorn.
So Jennifer got up to make some. On her way to the kitchen, she passed by the large bay window facing Gloomland Street and Twilight Gardens beyond. The curtains were not drawn and so Jennifer just happened to glance out, only to promptly freeze in horror.
For out there, among the fog-shrouded trees of Twilight Gardens, stood someone, several someones in fact. Jennifer couldn’t make out any faces, all she saw were silhouettes, outlined in stark black against the fog drifting around the streetlights in the park. But though she couldn’t see their faces, when Jennifer looked out at the silhouettes, she nonetheless knew at once that they were staring back at her.
Jennifer screamed. She screamed shriller than the bitchy cheerleader who had just gotten her throat slashed in the movie (and how could anybody scream with a slashed throat anyway?). She screamed so shrill that Dave fell from the sofa, Emma woke up in her cot upstairs, Hugo the raven fluttered from his sleeping spot atop the fountain in Twilight Gardens, old Mrs. Grimm in the house next door was torn from her nightly slumber in her favourite armchair and Paul MacQuarie in the other house next door got up from his desk and looked out of the window to see what weirdness Hallowind Cove had dished up this time around.
Once Dave had picked himself up from the hardwood floor, where he’d landed with a thud when he fell from the sofa, he came running at once.
“Jen, what’s the matter?”
“There,” Jennifer cried, pointing out of the bay windows at Gloomland Street and the park beyond, “Out there. They’re watching us.”
So Dave took a look out of the big bay window and saw the silhouettes in the park, all staring at the big old house. A shudder ran down his spine, but he suppressed it ruthlessly.
All right, so there were some extremely sinister looking people standing out there in the park, watching the house, his house. Still, maybe they were just some teenagers hanging out in Twilight Gardens to get drunk. Or maybe this was some kind of performance art?
Determinedly, Dave closed the curtains and made sure that the front door was locked and barred.
Once the curtains were closed, Jennifer and Dave settled down on the sofa again with a big bowl of popcorn and continued to watch the movie.
On the screen, the killer had just claimed his second victim, the burly jock who’d been sleeping with both the blonde bitchy cheerleader who’d been the first victim and her equally bitchy brunette best friend who was probably the next to die. But Dave and Jennifer found that they just couldn’t concentrate on the film. Not when there were shadowy silhouettes with unknown, but undoubtedly nefarious intentions outside, watching the house.
So Dave got up and went over to the big bay window. He pushed the curtains aside only a little bit and looked out. And indeed, there they were, still and silent and black, watching and waiting.
“Are… are they still out there?” Jennifer called from the living room.
“Yes, they are.” Dave peered out of the window again, where the silhouettes were still standing, unmoving. “That’s it,” he said, “I’m calling the cops.”
So Dave did just that. He called the police.
“Hallowind Cave police department,” a bored voice said on the other end of the line, “Sheriff Alastair Angus Aberdeen speaking. How can I help you?”
“There’s someone outside my house.”
“Outside your house, huh? And where would that be?”
“Gloomland Street 76.”
“The old Beauregard place, right?” the sheriff said, “So you’re the new folks then. Well, welcome to Hallowind Cove.”
“Thank you. But about those people…”
“The people who are outside your house on Gloomland Street, right?”
“Exactly. Those people, they…”
On the other end of the line, Sheriff Aberdeen sighed. “So what are they doing?”
“Who?”
“The people outside your house. What are they doing?”
“Wait a minute…”
Dave opened the curtains a crack again to look outside. Once again, the sinister shadows stared back at him from across the road.
“They’re… well, they’re just standing there.”
“So the people outside your house are just standing there, right?”
“Yes.”
“You do realise that standing around on the street is not actually illegal,” the sheriff said.
“Well, they’re standing around in a very sinister way,” Dave said, privately deciding that whoever had said that small towns were safer and the police more responsive to the citizens’ concerns than in the big city had obviously never been to Hallowind Cove.
“Standing around in a sinister way on a public street is not actually illegal either,” Sheriff Aberdeen pointed out.

Christmas in Silver Birch Valley by Lorri Moulton

Release date. December 23, 2018
Subgenre: Romantic fantasy

About Christmas in Silver Birch Valley:

A man spends the holidays in a small Northwestern town that may not be exactly what it seems...and rediscovers the true meaning of Christmas.

Excerpt:

PrologueDecember 1913

Two Native-American boys raced through the forest as the snow fell silently around them.  The older one glanced over his shoulder at the tracks they left behind.  Even though they knew the men would find them, running was their only option.

The three men riding horses followed the prints in the snow.  The one in front was angry, kicking his horse to make it go faster.  It would soon be dusk, and he didn’t want to lose the trail.

“Come on,” he yelled to the others.  “They can’t be far ahead of us.”

The boys ran as fast as they could until they reached the water.  It was too cold to run down the creek to lose the men, so they splashed across it instead.  As the older boy, almost twelve, reached back to help his brother up the hill, the men on horses caught up with them.

“What are you two doing out here?” demanded one of the men.

“I’ll ask the questions,” the angry one said.  “You know that was my deer, don’t you?”

The boys said nothing, which only made the man more upset.

“Answer me!” he said, bringing his horse up even with the boys.  He leaned down to grab the smaller one, who looked about ten.  Trying to protect his brother, the older boy slapped the horse’s rump.

The horse reared, catching the man off guard.  The reins slipped out of his hand and he fell, face first into the snow.  As his horse ran off, the other men laughed.  The boys glanced at each other, then started running again.

“Help me find my horse,” the angry man demanded, sitting up and wiping the snow off his face.  “Then, I’m going to teach those boys a lesson.”

Silver Birch Valley is a peaceful town, set in the mountains just south of the Canadian border.  The founder of the town had come from Scotland and stopped in the valley to rest his horses.  He and his wife had fallen in love with the landscape and decided to stay and build their home.  The town quickly grew around them as more people stopped to take in the view or rest their horses.  In a land of beautiful vistas, this one took their breath away.

Silver birch edged the creek, which started as a waterfall coming down from the mountains.  As it made its way into the valley, the creek ran between hills covered with evergreens until it reached the flat.  There, the water wound its way quietly between the clumps of silver birch.  Grass pasture stretched on either side until it met the hills.  Beyond, there were mountains all around except for the two narrow passes, leading in and out of the valley.

When the boys reached the top of the hill, they saw the town below.  The older one grabbed his brother’s hand as they hurried down the other side.  Twice, they almost slipped, but managed to stay upright.  The street lamps of the town could be seen through the snow as they ran across the valley.  It was almost dark, when they finally reached the livery stable.

The men on horses followed the tracks to the livery and dismounted.  Open up!” the angry man yelled, banging on the closed barn doors.  One slowly slid open and a man walked out.

“Can I help you?” he asked, looking around at the other men.

“I want to talk to those boys,” demanded the angry one.

“What boys?” asked the owner of the livery stable.

“You know, who I’m talking about!” the man exclaimed.  “Bring them out here or…”

“Or what?” asked the sheriff, walking up behind them.  It was 1913, but he still carried his rifle, when strangers rode into town.

“Or there’s going to be trouble,” the angry man replied.  “Maybe not today,” he added, glancing at the rifle, “but soon.  You can’t protect those people forever.”

“What people are those?” asked the sheriff, taking another step towards him.

The man glared, then looked over at his friends.  “Things are changing around here.  There’s more moving in, who think the way we do.  It’s just a matter of time before we’re the ones making the rules, then all those Native people will be out of this valley and these mountains.”

“Maybe,” the sheriff replied, “but today is not that day.  Get on your horses and ride out of town.”

As the three men rode past the Christmas tree, the angry one yelled, “You boys can’t hide here forever.  I will find you.”

About Lorri Moulton:

“You know what the issue is with this world? Everyone wants some magical solution to their problem and everyone refuses to believe in magic.”
--Lewis Carroll

Fairytales are simply stories that remind us to be our best selves. If we do this, we can be successful. Good will triumph over evil. True love is possible....and dragons can be tamed.

The need for fairytales is just as important today as it has ever been. True love is romantic, but it is also means considering what is important to someone else and when necessary, to put their needs before your own. To work together to accomplish the goals that matter to both of you. To be open to the idea that magical and miraculous things happen everyday. And to build a future that will make the world a better place, at least in your little corner of the kingdom.

So, take a step back in time and enjoy an Everyday Romance. Real life fairytales happen all the time. You just have to believe in the possibility…and look for magic in the most unexpected places.

My name is Lorri Moulton and I live on a farm in eastern Washington with my family and our five horses. I have a Master’s degree in History and grew up hearing so many wonderful stories about our own family tree. My grandparents spoke of a more simple time, when people loved each other and helped their neighbors. I hope these stories share some of that beauty of the past, with all of you.
