5 Obscure Sci-Fi Shows & Movies to Watch on Hulu

Today it gives us great pleasure to welcome our latest guest author.

Watching sci-fi shows and movies is a fantastic way to escape from the world's reality and dive into another location, whether here on earth or in a galaxy far away! Luckily, finding a sci-fi movie to watch on Hulu can be easy as there are several popular choices. Discovering hidden gems you may not have heard of can also be highly rewarding. Here are five options you may want to examine the next time you're in the mood to watch a stream on Hulu.

1. Colossal

Gloria, played by Anne Hathaway, gets booted out of her ex-boyfriend's New York apartment. Attempting to live life with a serious alcohol dependency, her future looks bleak. She parties all the time and doesn't have a job. Unable to find a gig as a writer, her only option is to move back to the house where she grew up. Once there, she meets with an old childhood friend, Oscar, and he gives her a job working in a bar.

Meanwhile, several news reports are surfacing about a giant creature wreaking havoc in Seoul, South Korea. At this point, Gloria begins to realize she's connected to the creature and the latest occurrences halfway across the world. This conclusion, mixed with the effects of alcohol, sends her into frequent spirals with Oscar and others.

One of the movie's main points is the idea that her writings play a direct role in real-world events. The film also manages to combine the genres of black comedy and sci-fi effectively. It's mixed with an array of talented voice work and offers an excellent way to think about how her actions are associated with a completely separate location.

 2. Battle for Terra

Using the effects of 3-D computer animation, Battle for Terra is an action-packed sci-fi film about an alien race of beings living on a peaceful planet facing destruction due to colonization by the last members of the human race. Visually, the film is stunning and full of several CGI environments.

Mala, featuring the voice of Evan Rachel Wood, lives her life peacefully with her friend Senn (Justin Long). Unfortunately, their lives change drastically when a mysterious object begins blocking a part of the Terrian sun. Without the aid of new technologies, they aren't aware of the danger that's coming. However, Mala has other intentions and builds a telescope, which she uses to discover smaller objects moving out of the large obstruction. Seeing these ships and invading forces too late, Terrians in the city are already being abducted by Scout spaceships by the time she gets back.

Along with the impressive visuals, this movie provides a chance to explore sacrifice, colonialism, and technology issues.

3. Aniara

After the earth is destroyed due to climate change, a group of humans hop aboard a spaceship and attempt to discover a new world where they can survive.

A woman, played by Emily Garbers, is an employee on the Aniara, a state-of-the-art spaceship taking humans on trips from Earth to Mars. Her job is to work as a "Mimarobe." She helps immerse passengers in experiences associated with virtual reality that tap into each participant's emotions and memories. During the first week of the voyage, the Aniara goes off course to avoid hitting space debris. However, before they can navigate correctly, the ship gets hit and loses its ability to propel due to a meltdown in the nuclear reactor. With the loss of propulsion and starship off-track, the Mimarobe's job becomes even more critical.

After four years adrift, crew and passengers have begun committing suicide due to the monotony of everyday life stuck on a spaceship. The Mimarobe develops an idea to create a device that will project visuals onto the windows of the dark spaceship. There are plenty of struggles between crew members, passengers and dissenters throughout the movie and it encourages us to contemplate life in close quarters.

4. Time Freak

Stillman (Asa Butterfield) decides to invent a time machine to travel back in time with his best friend Evan to see if he can repair the relationship he has with his girlfriend, played by Sophie Turner. During the breakup, he figures out how to build a time machine and change reality. Throughout the movie, he relives moments repeatedly to stop the problems causing the split.

Being a novice time machine builder, it breaks down, leaving the travelers stuck. Eventually, they fix the machine and continue to see if they can find why the relationship went sour. He's able to patch up the problems, and Stillman and Debbie are married. Having a time machine available causes a few challenges later in the storyline however as Evan becomes addicted to using in an attempt to create a perfect life.

The chemistry between Sophie Turner and Asa Butterfield is undeniable, which helps make this show a pleasure to watch during the times they interact on screen.

5. Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel

Combining science-fiction and comedy, this British flick is another time travel piece you may want to watch on Hulu.
