Excerpt:

Adam was running out of patience as he waited in the parlor room. A maid brought a decanter of cherry brandy and pastries, but he paid no attention to them. He was not hungry or thirsty, but he was curious.
“Mr. Jaegerson,” said a voice.
Looking ahead, he saw Lenara Gerrickson appear in the room. She still wore black. The fabric was a rich satin, adorned with intricate ebony lace and glittering onyx stones. Her green eyes glittered with a cold light as they rested on him. He could detect a change in her, but didn’t know what was different.
Standing up, he brought out the envelope with the broken seal. “Was it really you who sent me this?” For a moment, he hoped she would deny it. Hoped it was someone else playing a prank on him. Otherwise, it would be truly troubling.
“It was me,” she said.
Adam felt his jaw drop. “You cannot be serious!”
“I am. I have started training.”
It took a minute for him to gather his thoughts. “What training?” he demanded.
“Training to become a Guardian. Like my father. Like you.”
“Do you even hear the absurdity of which you speak? You’re a lady, not a warrior. You have no place among men.”
“I have been granted a place by Lord Vanok himself. If you wish to challenge him, I shall not stand in your way.”
“L-Lord Vanok?” Adam paled at the thought of confronting the great vampyric lord. Swallowing his hesitation, he said, “What about Stephan? How can you break his heart this way?”
Lena’s eyes widened as she bit her lip. Taking a deep breath, she said, “Your son has no heart.” Her voice was deceptively calm, but the storm raging in those green eyes was not missed by him.
“How can you say such a thing, Miss Gerrickson? You’re betrothed to him.”
“Not any more. I free him from all responsibility towards me. He is free to choose another bride.”
“No! You will marry him!” he spit out, his anger rising at the impertinence of the young woman.
“Your son is a disloyal man. He made my choice to pick up the sword quite easy.”
“You will die in the forests,” Adam hissed. “You have no idea of the horror that lurk in the shadows.”
Lenara smiled, but it did not reach her eyes. “I choose that fate over being your son’s bride.”
Adam was at a loss now. What could he say to that?
Mustering what dignity was left to him, he said, “No man will ever have you once you spend days and nights with other strange men. Have you given that a thought?”
“Strange men? They will be Guardians, like yourself, Mr. Jaegerson. Or are you implying that you will harm me in some way?” Her green eyes narrowed on him. “You understand that threatening me is an act of treason?”
Adam fought for control. How could the little woman turn into such a fire-spitting dragon?
“I will not touch you, of course,” he sputtered.
“Good,” she said, folding her arms across her chest. “Is there anything else I can help you with?”
“You are making a mistake.”
“I take full responsibility for it.”
“This is the last chance, Miss Gerrickson. If you break this engagement now, my family’s alliance would be lost to you forever.”
Lenara nodded. “I understand the consequences.”
